I think it depends on who you ask. IMO YES you can go too big. If your tank dosnt have the bioload the skimmer isn't going to be able to produce enough skimmate to clear the collection cup and pretty much renders the skimmer useless.

This is just my opinion. Others will tell you that you cant go too big. However I have gone way too big as I have a tendency for the extreme and it didn't work well for me.
