Which skimmer for 125-150?

#1
I know there are threads on this but very six months a new skimmer comes out so I'd like fresh opinions. Looking for bang for the buck, low maintenance (I don't want to clean this thing every time I turn around).

I've heard many people claim the Super Reef Octopus line are good. The question then is, which friggen one as they have many models that could fit the bill. Crazy -- why on earth do they have so many models?

Any other brands/models you particularly like?

i owned the life reef vs 36 and it was a power house. on my 125 i had 2 yellow tangs a niger trigger porcupine puffer a small school of chromis that always ran for their lives LOL, a six line wrasse and i fed very heavily in 9 months i never did a water change and the only real algae i had was on the back glass and a ball of cheto in the sump the size of a basketball. the maintenance on the life reef was minimal. the ventri design allowed for self cleaning. you should have seen how much gunk that thing pulled out. the only thing i did not like was that mine was external.

I run a Lifereef Vs something or another 24ish on my system. I LOVE it. These new skimmers are a FAD IMO. OOOooh I have a cone skimmer with a needle wheel that eats gunk for breakfast...really... A skimmer is a skimmer. As long as it produces tiny bubbles which have good contact time thats all you need as far as pulling gunk out. Protein skimmers are simple and these companies now a days are trying to get all fancy schmancy with them to charge you more money.

I clean my collection cup once every week or 2 to clean the buildup. my Venturi NEVER clogs (lifereef really has a great design in place to make this happen). Maintenance is slim to none. If the pump fails its only a mag 9 I believe so thats cheap to replace, better than paying 3-$400 for those red dragon pumps. Needle wheels fail and require constant maintenance from what I read but most swear by them now because they are IN. There is a reason Jeff hasn't changed his design on his protein skimmers for 15 years, because they work. If you want a virtually maintenance free skimmer I recommend Lifereef all the way!
