Just making sure if you were aware or not. I believe they are not reef safe and will eat corals and possibly more.

I had one a long time ago, got for a laugh but I kept it in the sump. Unlike hermits which can be fun to feed, thing mostly just wanted to hide.

It seems like they are really hit or miss and I am re-thinking. Some appear to be fine and some appear to bother the other reef occupants.

Good to know that, although they are pretty, they hide most of the time. That makes them less appealing.

They won't starve. If they start to get hungry they will eat anything. If you are the kind how likes to keep your tank clean, then they will likely be a terror. If you don't mind extra food floating around everywhere a few times a day so that they can scavenge and eat, then you might be 50/50.

I had one of these a few years ago and it was always hiding. Also it ate a few corals and fish. So just be careful. They are not easy to remove once added to a tank.

I think i mentioned in another post. But lots of cool crustaceans that are safe. If it's a peaceful tank, acro crabs, porcelin, etc are neat.

More for a nano but i love sexy shrimp and pom pom crabs.

Depending on fish and other livestock I'll again say small mantis shrimp rock. Very smart and can be interactive.

Hey Fitz19d, I'm definitely coming around to the mantis shrimp. Those things look cool--especially the peacock varieties. I was reading that they can literally punch a hole in a glass aquarium though. Did you have any issues like that?

Wives tales. If you put an adult peacock i. A 5gallon maybe. Even holding mine in a bare bottom 20 for a little while he smacked bottom all night every night to no dettiment.

Peacocks are cool but they are a big species. Need to be a species only tank. Will for sure annihilate fish and inverts. Prone to using coral to decorate burrow. A 40b or a 30g is fine with several inches of sand and making a pvc pipe network. Shallow tank i also fed mi e by hand or tweezer.

In a mixed reef you need to get one of the 1 inch species like a wennerae. Will usually make a tunnel in rock by smashing a cavern for themselves. Mine would dash into water column for food or come to entrance to grab from tongs. If not fed well or just mean may take out small crab/snails but are smart and get lazy with frequent feedings. Small ones shouldnt bother anything but smallest fish esp if slow or stays near sand maybe. Mine left engineer, dottyback, blenny, mandarin etc alone.

Peacock mantis shrimp are sweet! I agree with that choice. I think most lobsters are nocturnal, so if you have a nocturnal viewing tank, you might see it out and about more.
