So I'm in the dreaming phase of stocking my 180, and I, like many reefers before me, love the look of large angels and butterfly fish. Of course, none of them are deemed "reef safe". I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with either kind of fish in a mixed reef tank, or any recommendations of particular fish that may be reef safer than their cousins. If you have them I'd love to see pics!

I had the same dream. I kept rolling the dice and adding angels and butterflies to my reef. The only butterflies that did good without picking were a yellow longnose and copperband. The only angels I had success with were genicanthus. Its not worth the headache to be honest. I have had to tear apart my reef on more than a couple of occasions taking fish out. Just be prepared thats what you will probably have to do. Fish trap worked great for most but some just dont go in it.

I have a lot of angels in reefs. First no Zoanthids or fleshy LPS. Second feed a lot. Third be prepared to remove corals if you really want the angels more. Best bet is to stick with SPS only.

I bought a tiny regal angel who was a model citizen. Until 2 years later when all my zoas disappeared!! Got rid of him as soon as he started going after LPS

It is hit and miss with fish. Some are great, some are a terror. They all have a natural behavior. It is just a question of which ones follow the book or not. If you want to create what you want, there is only one thing to do; try it. But as mentioned before, be prepared to move rock around and rebuild it if one goes off!

I tried a Koran angel in my 120g. It did great until just before it started to change to subadult. Then it started in on Xenia, then zoas, then LPS... Then I tore my entire tank down to catch him... After seeing Scott's tanks first hand, I'd say he's hit the nail on the head...SPS and a ton of room!!
