Hey All,

I’m moving to Arizona in September, and have come to the difficult decision that I’d like to sell my tank, rather than attempt to move it across states. I would much prefer to sell the tank as a whole, rather than dividing it up, and I hope to provide a discount in this regard (in my opinion).

It is a 40 gallon reef tank with a 15-20 gallon refugium. It comes with a lot of coral and fish, but there is still plenty of space to “make it your own”. I will provide more details about the tank in the coming posts.

I truly do not know how to value my tank, as it is priceless to me and worth much less to everyone else. I’d like to try an auction format to try to reach a fair price. I will set a reserve at $300, as I could easily hit this figure by selling the livestock/corals alone.

Please reply here if you have any questions, I will attempt to provide as much detail and photos as possible, although please forgive my blue-washing phone camera.

Tank and Equipment

Display Tank: 40 gallon glass aquarium purchased new from Petco about a year ago. One minor scratch that could probably be buffed out by someone handier than myself.
Sump/Refugium: 15-20 gallon tank I got off craigslist, installed baffles myself. Has 3 chambers: Water Drain/Skimmer, refugium w/ Chaeto and LR, Water Return.
Tank Stand: Basic black tank stand, purchased NEW. Nothing fancy but it looks nice in my kitchen and fits the tank perfectly.
LED Lights: Reefbreeders Value LED, purchased new
Overflow Box: Can’t remember how many GPH it’s rated for, but it’s been working fine for me and was purchased new.
Protein Skimmer: Purchased new, some sort of generic brand but has worked very well for me
Return Pump: Don’t know the GPH (see a trend here? J) but was recommended to me by my LFS and was purchased new.
Powerheads: Two powerheads used for water circulation, purchased new

Also included is EVERYTHING that you want from my collection of fish tools, supplies, etc. I have dry food, calcium and alk dosers, many siphons, cleaning tubes, buckets, etc. There is too much varied stuff to list here, but just know that you are getting everything that I used to keep the tank alive and happy!

After all of these pictures, I'm realizing that the only thing I don't have is a FTS! Lights are off for the night but I'll get one in the morning if I can.

As a reminder, I'd like to do an auction format with a reserve of $300. If this ends up not working (eg no one wants to pay $300) I'll reevaluate. Thanks for your time, I know this was a lengthy post but I figured I might as well do it right!

I don't think glass tank can be buffed out. glws

depends on the type of damage, but it is time consuming. Can prolly kiss buffing deep scratches out goodbye but light surface scratches usually come out with the right tools

Auction style usually means set a base price, you can have a reserve... But then you state rules (ie. How much bids can increase by, time the auction goes until,... )

Well that shows about how handy I am...apologies. Regardless, it is a small scratch that I only really notice when I'm looking for it.

I guess I don't really know the best way to do this, and maybe I'm confused about what a reserve is. I don't want to receive LESS than $300, because I believe I can get this number easily from livestock.

So how about this:

Starting bid is $300
Minimum bidding increment of $25
Auction will last until the last day of July

I tried to reply but it seems your inbox is full. I'd like to try the auction format before selling it at a fixed price, but maybe there won't be much interest and I'll look stupid :)

Typically people do bid increments of $1 and the auction builds slowly till the end where it is a race. By doing $1 I can bid for example $301 or $419 or whatever, where with $25 its a big jump for some that like to snipe out at the last minute and beat the other person by $1.

Honestly bid sniping is not something I'd like to encourage...while it might be fun for the winner it is hugely disappointing for the loser. I think that if you want to bid snipe, you should be forced to pay a good chunk more than the initial bidder.

I recently experienced this here I missed out on my clownfish by 1 minute because my phone logged me out of the site and by the time I logged back in 2 minutes had passed and I had lost.

Thats a good idea. There as another person that was too minutes late to bid so he would have definitely made more money on his auction.

great idea, I feel bad now for not having a rule in my auction about that. I would have loved to take the higher bid obviously but I try to do things with integrity. Going forward if I have any other auctions that is, I will make sure to do just this.

Kris I still have your golden chalice and you still have my pink thing. Come take some pics for me lol

Of course I understand I wouldn't even be complaining if my phone hadn't sabotaged me lol.
