I just glued some scrap pieces of acrylic on them. A small cabinet knob would work, too, or legos, or those little cedar balls you put in your drawers... Just be cognizant of where you place them if you have MH lights. Or use a glue that won't be bothered by the heat.

Plastics are generally unsafe at the very least for leaching phosphates, additionally Chinese plastics are notorious for literally being poisonous.

Kids toys are typically safe if you use actual Legos that come from a US Store and not from a bin in Hong Kong. They have to be safe since kids put them in their mouths.

They are probably safer than the plastic on Jebao pumps.

Since the Legos are not sitting in the water, leaching phosphates is a nonissue.
