Hello,

I had the opportunity to take a month long vacation and I had a person from the LFS maintain the tank while I was gone. When I left, my 8 gallon nano reef was pristine and the parameters were fantastic and it had lots of corals that were healthy and growing like crazy. When I got back, I had lost my beautiful dragons breath macro algae and the Ora blue macro algae, seven zoo colonies including electric oompa loompa, Rastas and fruit loops. The other corals were montipora, birds nest, and clove polyps.

My house sitter claimed that he showed up twice in the first week and nothing for next three weeks. The hired fish guy kept on canceling and not rescheduling the water changes. The parameters were so bad upon my arrival that I am surprised my only damsel survived.

Here is the story, I cannot make this up. My house sitter decided to try to do a water change he learned from a YouTube video and did not use r/o water, and added so many chemicals that the parameters have killed the corals and they were not removed from the tank. He got nervous so he turned off the power to the tank and the lights last week. He lit Incense near the tank to cover up the smell and never thought to call the fish store nor the LFS guy who was flaky. It is going to take another water change for me to feel confident that the tank is back and stable again. I took my time with the tank and it has been three weeks since this discovery and recovery.

If anyone has some frags for sale, please let me know. i am located in Boulder and will respond to all pm's. Thank you!

Yours,
Ryan

WOW, the level of incompetence on both their parts is amazing. Did you hire the guy through the LFS or just work out something on the side? If the former I'd complain to the LFS owner and see if they can get you new livestock, because that guy is responsible for killing your tank.

Sorry, I'm in the same boat as lkoechle -- new tank and I just barely started adding livestock this week so no frags to give. Good luck though, that really sucks!

Sorry to hear this man. That's like every reefers worst nightmare when going on vacation. If you around downtown I can cut you a big chunk of green stylo birdnest, grape monti, possibly a few zoas too I could give you.

Thank you all for the well wishes and PM's. It is a good lesson for letting things go and not being attached to things. Though the tank has gone through hell the past few weeks, I see it as an opportunity for change. I look forward getting the corals and macros replaced next week and starting over.

Not too soon. It is always fun to play with the ram fans.

To answer your question, he did graduate last year from CU with his undergrad, but was born and raised in Fort Collins until he left for Boulder. So, I think this is a nature versus nurture question and most often, nature is the culprit and I like to blame Fort Collins on this one.

Go Buffs!

I have a DBTC Green Frogspawn available right now. However I'm down in Littleton and would need to get it picked up... (See the DBTC thread.)
