Copperband question

I have a huge aiptasia problem. I've tried everything except a copperband. I keep hearing mixed info about their eating habits so I wanted to ask. Do they just eat aiptasia or will my bubbletip be in danger too?

Good luck with copperbands. The first hurdle you will face is getting them to eat. After you have accomplished that your next step is keeping them alive during QT. After that is making sure they continue to eat in a reef setting (competition for food). The next hurdle is making sure that there are no fish even slightly harassing them. After that you have a SLIGHT chance that it will go after aiptasia. Even then they are very difficult to keep alive long term.

In other words this is a very very difficult fish, I would categorize it as "expert" only. It should only be attempted by someone who can dedicate the time, energy and patience for one (not saying you cant provide this Gabe, just want to make you aware of just how difficult this fish is). QT is also a MUST with this fish, not for diseases but getting them accustomed to captive life. We get them in on almost every shipment at Premier and our success rate is probably less than 20% with them, however demand is high due to the possibility they will eat aiptasia. I would say the chance of them eating aiptasia is around 20% as well.

I got a CBB a few months back and it did well in QT. Started off eating live black worms then live brine. Eventually I was able to get it off live foods and it started eating mysis. After being in QT it went into my display with no aggression from other fish. It ate well and started on pellets even. It was a very active fish and a great eater. About a week ago it hid in the rockwork for 2 days then I found my fire shrimp picking on it. It was still alive but could not swim. No sign of disease, stress or any issues before this. I euthanized the poor guy :(

If you do get a CBB please please QT it and spend plenty of time with it getting it ready for your DT. Please also let us know the progress!

Edit:
I also highly recommend reading the Copperband Primer before purchasing. A lot of good info which should help your success rate should you chose to get one.

wow well thanks Kris for the info. I guess I will second guess this decision. Mean while I literally have 200+ aiptasia destroying my tank. I've lost several coral that I loved. Shrimp didn't work, aiptasia x made it worse, nudibranches were a joke. I'm pretty much at my wits end..

Sorry man, not trying to discourage you. How many peppermint shrimp did you try and in how big of a system? IME one or 2 is not going to cut it, you really got to add a bunch at once. If it were me and I had 200+ aiptasia I would probably start over! Thats a ton of weeds man!

I was considering it. I mean it started with one then I used aiptasia x. Big mistake. I assume it shot out spores now I have a huge mess. It's only been a week with the shrimp. Im going to not feed the tank a couple of days and see if the shrimp get hungry enough

Sorry to hear that bro. I know you did quite a bit of coral collecting for awhile. Throw in a BUNCH of peppermints from different places. Some places, including Trish (Blue Diamond Aquatics - sponsor) have peppermints that are fairly certain to go after aiptasia. Honestly, throwing in a mix of a bunch from different LFS's or sponsors give you a good chance that at least a few will start having at it. How big of a tank?

I would be sick to my stomach if I was in your boat. I thought I just started getting majano's this month, thankfully I think they aren't...but I was sweatin' it.

Shelly at Elite guaranteed these eat aiptasia when I called on the phone before coming. I called and said I know you can't guarantee and she said "No actually I can guarantee these eat aiptasia" and really she's always done me right. I assume I have the right kind at the moment. But yeah there's only 3 in there so i may need to buy a dozen more lol

I understand that there are shrimp from different reigons and some areas do not have aptasia to the degree of being a food source. I have seen some shrimp go wild when dropped into a tank that was overgrown whit aptasia. Trish of Blue Diamond Aquatics knows and i think normally stocks the shrimp from the correct region. I know she is a vendor on SCMAS but I think she is here also.
Hope this helps.
