Cyano Help?

#1
Hi all,

I've got some pretty bad cyano in my 55. Practically covers the whole sand bed. My phosphate levels are at 0, I will test the other levels ASAP. I use rodi water from Walmart. Any help would be nice!

thanks,

Not sure of the rodi from Walmart. Do you have a tds meter.

Start running gfo reactor and do water changes as well as stirring the sand bed.

What is your water movement like? The stuff likes slower water movement.

Re: Cyano Help?

One thing I just learned, no3 and po4 tests for the net nutrients. For example, if you have 2ppm po4 and the cyano/algae is using 2pp, then your net reading is 0ppm. Make sense? I don't always explain clearly.

Correct. It's entirely possible for a tank with algae problems to test at low nutrient levels. The algae will take up the nutrients resulting in a zero reading.

Test the water going into the tank. Consider adding more flow to reduce growth. You can use a product like ChemiClean to kill off the cyano but if you don't deal with the cause, it will just grow back.

Thanks guys for the helpful tips! My solution I think was just my lighting cycle. Kept em off for 2 days did the job. Thanks everyone!

I am glad the lighting has helped. I also think you need to address the cause of the problem, otherwise you may run into the same thing again.
