I'm running mine in sump, but you can also remove it from the sump if you've got the room to run it externally. I didn't have room. I can get a better measurement and pics when the tank's broken down.

I think that footprint includes the pump. My skimmer is in sump and the pump is external to sump/skimmer about a foot away.
