The sponge I use is pretty big - 12"x6"x1". This sits in my sump for months on end without a rinse or change so there is plenty of bacteria to avoid a cycle.
The blue/white polyfilters from any petstore work great for this.

I do agree with you, Elite does a good job. They get their fish from the best wholesaler in the industry. I can guarantee you this, there is not one retailer out there that will tell you not to quarantine your fish.

Premier takes scale samples of all fish and looks at them under a microscope, we treat with Prazipro, gram positive & negative antibiotics and any other treatment a fish might need. We hold fish for a minimum of 2 weeks for observation to make sure they are healthy and eating and I still tell everyone who buys a fish from me to quarantine.

Is that a do as you say not as you do advice, or do you keep your own fish for longer at Premier before introducing them to your DT?

The fish I get from Premier are released to me as soon as they are released to you I do not keep them there any longer. I have confidence in Wills quarantine practices. However, from a retail prospective I cannot confidently tell a buyer not to quarantine. Ultimately it is up to the hobbyist to insure healthy livestock going into their systems, not the retailer.

Please understand this thread is made by me - Kris, a hobbyist. Not Kris, employee of Premier.

If I got a sick fish from Premier, or any other retailer for that matter and introduced it into my system I would be upset with myself not the retailer.

Absolutely.... There is definitely some CYA on the retailers part in the statement about quarantining. It is also not up to the retailer to guarantee the fish unless the retailer is the only one that does the maintenance and stocks the tank. There are two many other things that could happen to cause an outbreak that is outside of the retailers hands.

I think people who have had an issue with an outbreak because of a new fish fall into three categories.

1) They start quarantining themselves.
2) They find a better source for fish that has a good quarantine process.
3) They quit or limit their fish stock.

I think more often they would find a better source for fish then go through the hassles of quarantining sick fish. Many people who quarantine themselves would also find a better source. Instead of having to medicate every time, they will QT for observation. Which is probably something I would consider doing when I build a new tank.

BTW. This discussion really relates to the type of retailers there are. Retailers who are just in it for the money and many times cut corners vs retailers who are actually hobbyists that care about the quality of stock they sell.
