Dosing Question

#1
I am needing to dose alk, calcium and magnesium. I was wondering what kind of a schedule I should do this on. How much time should pass in between adding calcium and alk? can I dose mag whenever?

I dose my alk in my sump, let it clear out, then calcium. Idk if that is correct bit it seems to work.

I think this depends on the levels that you have in your tank, and what your desired levels are. Being able to dose calcium and alk within a certain time frame also depends on what brand you are using. Some brands say that you should dose them on different days, while some brands make their products so you can dose them within seconds of each other.

To answer the question, wait until what you have added has a chance to mix with the water. I guess it depends on how high your flow is. But I feel if you does one to the sumo, wait a few mins and get the next ready, you should be fine. Unless you have a trickle throught the sump.

The jist of how it was explained to me; calc and alk will bond to each other, that's why you need mg. Ca and alk will form loose bonds with mg and your coral will be able to readily use them in this form. Without mg, your ca and alk will form a strong bond and your coral will not be able to use them, thus effectively wasting both. You need to dose ca and alk separately for them not to bond together, I got told dose ca with mg. AquaVitro claims that you can dose within minutes of each other. I've dosed the AquaVitro line and loved it. However it's fairly expensive. HTH

After I looked into this it seems teh best way is to dose on different days and make sure mag levels are high. And Aron I guess ill go to church and pray for my tanks...... probably every bit as effective as anything esle i do for them lol

Iv been dosing Kalk with my ato and like it so far for my little tank. Ca and alk seem pretty solid. I does a little mg a few times a week to keep it above 1300.

It's only 15 ml of magnesion beteen changes at most, then salinity is reajusted with each weekly water change if it's slightly off. I've never seen sg move higher than 1.026.

But thanks for that heads up I really had not factored that in much.

I dont know for sure, but I think that is a fair assumption.
I also believe undisolved calcium hydroxide is unreadable, thus why kalk added -unsettled- will spike Ca while in suspension via flow, which is why many LPS display feeding behavior in its presence, but Ca test will read much lower than what is actually there.
Like I said though-all assumpion, because I dont know how titration tests work.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titration its all greek after about 3 paragraphs.
