It's time for a trimming. I'll probably be able to clip off a nice size piece if anybody is interested...

Hooking up the gfo reactor this weekend and would like to trim this down just in case my levels get low, so the only rule is you have to be available for pickup this weekend in NW Denver.

Pic below is from my tank today...with some strategic cutting someone should be able to walk away with maybe 1/3 or so of that piece.

aztec came by and picked up the chunk he claimed...I'll put you as next in line if you like. May be a few weeks before it's ready; I'm making some changes to my feeding schedule and will probably end up with slower growth, but I'll let you know for sure.

Very nice Khalis. I'll have to get some when I get the new tank online.

Remind me to grab some from you next I am at your place. Going to try your suction cup idea, love how it looks on the glass.

You got it. That suction cup has worked out well. I've had to re-stick it to the glass maybe 2x after bumping it during cleaning...but the algae has stayed threaded through the hole in the suction cup. I was afraid it may die off and detach itself but it's actually growing (extremely slowly) at that end as well.

Gabe (Cherub) hooked me up with a little bit about 2 months ago. After my emerald crabs got to it, fought over it, and tore it to shreds, I was left with maybe a 3" strip that I stuck to the glass with a suction cup. What's in that pic was basically grown from a piece no larger than my pinky 2 months ago. (yea...apparently I had some nutrients, lol)

davey, how large is your tank? There are a couple people in line but if everyone is interested in taking a smaller piece and just growing it out I'd be willing to bring some to the meeting this month. I should have enough for everyone that's chimed in by then.

All I ask is that everyone keep this circulating in the program...it's algae after all and considering how fast it grows and how easy it is to "frag", I'd hope everyone is willing to pay it forward. :)

Good on you Khalis. I won't need any for a while though.

It grows fast for you? Man, this is the slowest growing algae I've ever had, but it's by far the most beautiful. Mine has probably doubled in six months or so.

Oh wow. I started with a small piece 2 months ago and have already cut off 2 large chunks; I think mine doubles in a month's time.

I did have some rock that was likely leaching phosphates, so available nutrients was definitely a factor initially. Once the nuisance algae was under control though, I went back to dosing aquavitro fuel and the growth took off. The macro and my zoas seem to like that stuff. I did stop dosing it though as a small spot of cyano recently popped up when I upped the dose...wanna make sure that doesn't get out of hand. FWIW...my macro is stuck to the glass about halfway up and directly under the mp10. The undertow of the pump pulls detritus right into the macroalgae...I shake it out before my weekly water changes, but I wonder if the fact that the macro is a nice little detritus trap helps the growth. I may have to put some on the opposite end of the tank and see if the growth rate is any different.

jahmic- I have a 75, the only problem it sounds like is that I also have a couple emerald crabs. They have done wonders for the bubble algae, and the kids love to watch them, however I wonder if they'd tear this up before it could grow. Great idea with placing it "unreachable" and directly in the path of the 'tank current'. I have a few other macros and they are slow growers as well. My phosohates are consistently low as well, but I don't mind dosing supps.

Yea my emerald eliminated bubble algae as well. I've also managed to somehow escape a hair algae infestation recently...it began to take hold in a couple spots but I added a pair of hermits and just did some manual removal; haven't seen it since. I don't think my phosphates are out of control, in fact they should be pretty low judging by my sps growth/coloration and the fact that I'm running a skimmer rated for more than double my tank volume. I really think the fact that the macro is in an ideal spot to catch detritus has made a difference. Seems reasonable being that hair algae always seems to grow in spots where detritus accumulates...and the growth takes off as more and more detritus get's trapped between the hairs of algae. Just a hypothesis. Supplements would probably help as well...just don't go overboard and cause a bloom like I did! ;)

As for your emeralds...yea, mine came across the macro and immediately went to town on it. There have been a couple times where, after moving it out of reach, the suction cup fell off and I found the crab huddled in a corner behind the rocks hoarding the macro and stuffing himself. Every so often I do feed him a little piece to satiate him...otherwise he does this:

If you can keep it out of reach at least for a while until it grows out, you should be fine. I'd have no problem putting this large colony in my tank with my emerald right now; I know he'd pick at it but it's large enough where I'm certain it's growth would outcompete his appetite. The only thing stopping me is a) I don't have any room anywhere else in the tank, and b) I don't want little pieces of macro floating all over the place and potentially dying off if they get trapped in one of my caves.
