I have it on my 40 currently, was always worried a falling rock would break the glass. Now I'm wondering about detritus issues, and the inability of my sandsifters to do their job because of the egg crate.

My thoughts, detritus will not be any more of an issue with or without egg crate as sand will fill in cracks and all detritus will stay on top of sand or move around as if it was in a regular tank crate or no crate. (All that was written in one breath)
i dont have much time to respond but will enlighten you on my findings of eggcrate under rock....it creates pockets that CUC cant get to thus creating anaerobic bacteria pockets which are bad... id rather see a sheet of abs plastic or starboard under rocks than eggcrate. plus if you have high flow, the eggcrate will show through and look unsightly... if you use white starboard or abs plastic sheet, it will look fine.
If falling rocks is the only concern i wouldnt worry about it and just do sand. Personally havent had any falling rock issues in all my years of reefing.
why not just put rock directly on tank bottom? fill sand around it after placing the rock? or on top of a pvc structure, if you were thinking eggcrate to boost up the rock...

thats the way its supposed to be done but some people dont understand why.... and then they wonder why their rocks fall when they add a pistol shrimp or a fish that likes to burrow under rocks...
