Frag tank setup questions!

Ok I'm picking up my first frag tank on Monday and need to know some basics. Please try to answer these questions.
-should I use a hob filter or Wetdry?
-what should be the bottom of the frag tank? Can I use sand or would it be better to use eggcrate?
-what maintenance would I be facing?

1. You could drill the tank instead of using hob or wet dry. That's how most of the frag tanks I see are done
2. This depends on what kind of things are going into the frag tank. If it's only frags I'd just to egg crate and not use sand. If you're going to be growing out some bigger colonies, brains, scoly's, etc then I'd also incorporate sand.
3. Same as your normal tank

I would highly recommend simply hooking it up to your dt if possible. Will make life much easier.

Lol I run a canister filter on my dt. I have heard of drilling it and doing a closed loop?

However you can do it. Would make for alot more stable parameters i imagine.

The cool guys drill a bean animal setup with coast to coast overflow...just saying. This one is half taken apart.

Question is if I'm setting this grow out/frag tank up would I NEED a sump for best results or what? What is closed loop.

sump,
go bare bottom, elevate the frag racks
same as a reef tank.

Ya brah-ski, you can do whatever you like. "Some filtration is better than no filtration" is what a wise man once told me. A highly recommend an ato though.

IMO sump is the best way to go with the closed loop system but as has been stated, whatever works best for you
