Ok so after getting home from a 2 night stay in the hospital with my GF ( she is doing fine now) i took a peak at my tank to find it a mess of course! and my red hornet zoas MIA off the plug! i tore apart the rock work to try and recover it. in short they are gone and now i am planing a new build to get rid of all the fish.(except a few that i still like) so mainly the maroon clown will be going for sure! So here is my idea. I currently have a 55g a 50g a 20l and should be picking up another 20L on wed. The 55g is my current tank and one 20L houses 2 clowns. so my plan is to set up both 20L side by side with the 50g as a sump. the reason behind it as im sure someone will ask why not make the 50g your display. well i am going to make my hobby a little experiment i will set up two frag/grow out tanks set up with 2 different lights. Im not sure what it will be yet but open to suggestions. Each tank will have similiar stock I probably will not be able to match stock between the two perfectly. my goal is to make the only variable the lighting so they will both be plumed in to the 50g. my goal is to really just have fun growing coral since that has really became my passion in the hobby not fish. I mean i love the look of fish but my maroon clow is a bastard and now i have a grudge lol. I will also be growing out to sell/trade of course and to complete DBTCs as well. So any suggestions on set up or is my idea just crazy talk? I am thinking no or very little LR in the 20L and putting it all in the sump. will probably run some of my old sand to avoid a loss in bio filtration. ill get a more detailed plane once i can start the build... I will post a for sale/ trade thread as well since i will be fundiong most of this build with items from my current set up. So what do you guys and gals think??

Are you going to do bare bottom tanks as well?

I would do LEDs on one as that is the lighting that has all the question marks right now. Get as wide a range of colors, each on there own controller. That way you can do the RB/W combo for 3 months, then turn on say True Violet and compare growth. Will take a while, but you might be able to get that magic color combo that not only looks good, but makes the corals grow like weeds.

and yea i was thinking that also what would you recommend for the second tank halids or T5?

I would do a halide/T5 combo if you can. That's the old standby for growth and coloration so it would be a good benchmark.

do you think i should use some kind of substrate?
FFFFF NO! I decided to add an inch of sand, previously bb, and my tank is still cloudy. I rinsed the sand previously, until the water ran clear. As soon as I put it in the tank, cloudy. It's been 4 days now.

yea i was thinking the same and it helps i have a combo light but i am still looking for a new ballast for it. I cant beleive how hard it is to find a electronic 150w ballast for a decent price.

Another thing I would think about is PAR. If you could some how make sure that the LED's and halide/T5 have the same PAR at the bottom of the tank that would help eliminate that from making things grow faster.

Another good coral to use would be an undata as I hear they are slow growers, and a clam. Though depending on the clam you might need some sort of sand bottom. Maybe do the bottom part of a cup full of sand with the clam inside that?

yea i think ill put my current sand in the sump and slowly remove it. as i hate it i am going to make a concrete block out of it and throw it in the sewage pounds to rot in poo

ok so i have been pondering. i want to make these tanks as similear in every aspect i can except for the lighting. So flow is the next hurdle i was thinking run one return pump and "T" it off for each 20L the from there i would split it down to 3 returns each tank. Have each one going to a different tear of the frag rack i will make......i could also throw a mj1200 in each tank. how does that sound for even flow? or enough flow?
