green hair algae

#1
So im getting some green hair algae in tank and i wanna eliminate it completely.I went through a bad cyano a few months ago but that has been completely solved for about a month and a half. all my parameters are in check however i know the algae will make nitrate and phos read zero. my salt is good. nothing like ammonia or nitro in it. however rodi system tds is reading .2 . Im gunna get some emeralds to help take out whats in there but really wanna fix whats causing it....

So some specs about my sump.
tank is 46 gal, some is about 30 gal, overflow runs into aquaclear rated 70 where it has carbon media and phosban, then drops through wet dry system and then through live rock and into more sponge and carbon media then to skimmer which is a g3.

any suggestions?

I had hair algea and couldnt get rid of it for the life of me, tried everything, even a 4 hour photo period, nothing worked. Ended up removing the infested rocks drying them and starting over.

I've had luck with peroxide, too. Take the rock out, dose it with peroxide, rinse in rodi, and put it back. If there's a lot, submerge the rock in tank water and pour in some peroxide and let it sit a while. Then rinse and put back.

This doesnt cuase any die off in the rock does it? Could result in an ammonia spike if so.

I didn't notice any spike, but then I have a huge amount of rock in my system and did not need to treat much of it. Works great on frag plugs, too. I didn't notice any ill effects on the coral, provided that you didn't put full strength peroxide directly on them. Needs to be a 50/50 mix with tank water. They close up, but opened again in an hour.

Yup. I sure did. Small bucket, half tank water and half peroxide, let em sit for 30 min or so, rinse in rodi, and put back in tank. The next day, the hair algae is all white, and pulls off easily. No more hair algae that I could see.

Just know that I'm a newbie, and did this with corals that I wasn't especially attached to, in case things went bad. Even tho I saw no ill effects, don't get mad at me if you do this with some supersensitive highly overpriced corals that you are deeply in love with, and something goes wrong. Reef at your own risk.

IM holding you personally responsible Cindy! LOL, Just kidding. Im gonna give it a try on a couple lower end zoas and see what happens.

may also want to make sure your nitrates, phosphates, doc are in check.nuisance algae needs food sources t grow, there will still be spores eft behind in your system unless you cook your rock and sand. none may come back after a dip but resolving the food source would more likely guarantee it wont. check out the forum threads on algae scrubbers also.

My two cents: (a) lower po4 and No3 with whatever popular product or method you want. (b) Manually remove as much as you can every 3-4 days. (c) Buy a large amount of snails - especially those large turbo's. That worked for me. My sump and display are 100% clear of GHA.

I did the peroxide route, and it would be temporary, back in a week. Also, I completely concur that don't use peroxide on SPS, I lost some good frags that way.

I had some clove or pest growing on my entire colony of bam bams, my brother and I took them out used a syringe and dropped 3% peroxide which is a weaker version on the entire colony! I was pretty nervous but wasnt about to introduce this into my display tank. We applied it use a toothpick to get the stuff off and from inbetween the zoas. Did a saltwater rinse applied again and the cloves or whatever they were all died off and I didnt loose a single polyp. I think I have a picture of them before and after I will look and post them. I can also look for he article about this if anyone is interested.

so my parameters were good. and yes as wet dry i have basically a wet dry system that then runs into a refugium. i would love to peroxide dip however theres a coral attached to that rock in paticular that i love yet nobody seems to know what it is.
