If you are getting new heaters anyway, get two heaters of lower wattage (100-150W each) and set them to the same temp. That way if one heater fails on (which is by far the most common cause of tank crashes) then it will only be powerful enough to bring your tank a couple degrees more than normal temp, which will make corals angry, but wont kill anything.

I have a chunk of purple stylo you can have
Oh, thank you SO very much!!!

Are you planning on being at the Sept meeting? If I wait a little bit I can make sure if my stylo is going to make it or perish. I'm not writing it off completely yet, but it's not looking good.

I found the missing green/blue cromis - it was on the floor - guess he thought that was better than boiling...

I know stress can trigger dormant Ich in fish so I'm really hoping my blue hippo tang doesn't 'get' it.

A Ranco controller is like $40-50 bucks and they are rock solid. All they do is temp, but also are pretty cheap if you don't want to go with a reef-based controller. Big-tank people all over the world rely on Ranco to control thousands of watts of heaters and chillers.

+1 Rancos are solid, and a dedicated temp controller is a must in this hobby. An aquarium controller is a better way to go, but if money is tight, a temp controller is a good alternative. The system I use, which is basically bulletproof is this for my 125 gallon.

200 watt heater in the tank. Internal thermostat set 1 degree above tank temp. On/off controlled by my apex. Set to latch on in the event my apex fails.

200 W heater in my sump. Set 2 degrees above tank temp. On/off controlled by my apex. Set to turn off if my return pump is off, my high high float triggers, or my low low float triggers. Set to latch off if my apex fails.

If your stylo doesnt make it, let me know, I have several decent sized frags you can have.
