The magic number when dealing with MH is watts per gallon. They say 3.5 watts per gallon is BARE minimum but shoot for 5-10 watts per gallon. At 5W pg your looking at 1050 watts. So roughly 3 400 watt units. Really depends on your dimensions, depth etc. If you post the dimensions of the tank and the type of fixtures you have I'm sure more people will chime in. GL!

i would probably do 2 400w and 2 250w on a tank like that.

However, at this point, I would be considering LED due to the cost of keeping 1500w of MH online.

I run 3 250's on my 225 (72x27x27) I think my PAR numbers are pretty good. Granted I also run T5's as well. Its all about the reflectors IMO. Here are my numbers:

And my reflectors:

LumenMax Elite – Mogul

  • High performance 95% reflective European aluminum reflector
  • Rust-proof and light-weight aluminum frame
  • Quick release mounting bracket
  • Adjustable socket to center different lamps
  • Adjustable lamp cord positioning
  • Can accommodate 175, 250 and 400 watt lamps

I would use all five. I would run the two outside and the center for normal periods (X below). I would fire up the two in-between for 2-3 hours a day to simulate high noon (o below). You are basically talking about 1KWH for the 2 extra (500w each with heat and stuff?), so 8-10 cents an hour - or 24-30 cents a day if you run them for 3 hours. Bulbs would last for 3 years with this kind of interval.

I have used 4x250w HQI and 2x150w HQI over a standard 120 (4x2x2) with excellent results with SPS and Clams.
