How to dismantle a tank?

#1
Hey all -

Bummed I'm just now finding out about this site now, not sure how I've missed. I've been in the hobby for a few years and have dangerously had too much expendable income from the get go. That has led to me acquiring a fairly large tank. 220 some gallons (72"x 30" x24"). Well I am starting a new job that will require a lot more of my time and my income will be dropped to a fifth of what it is now (sweet deal right?). Plus I had a little flood (no defect in the tank, my negligence, wasn't paying attention when I was filling my ATO and let it run over onto my carpet. I feel like for now, this is the point when I need to get rid of this behemoth, take care of my house and shift focus for a little while.

I'm sure I'll get back into the hobby at some point but for now, it has to go. My question for you all is, what is the best way to go about it? Craigslist, LFS? Various classifieds? I'd really appreciate any input you could give me?

Thanks!

Generally get the most by parting out but takes the longest. Have any livestock you are getting rid of?

I would say to sell livestock first then rock and sand. Once this is gone try to sell your tank. Many people will try to sell it all as one item and ask to much for it.

If you piece it out and offer them on say this forum first. Then CL and Facebook. Only reason I say it in that order is knowledge of the hobby.

Unfortunately this time of year the forums is rather slow and will pick up when school is back in session.

Just my two cents.

Ask and you may find out, don't ask and you will never know.

Thanks for the replies guys. Parting it out does seem the smartest. And Sctip, I agree it would be great to get stuff to the people who know what they are doing. I think I have to be a little more active in the forum before I can post in the buy, sell, trade. But yeah, obviously I would love to give to my fellow hobbyists first.

scchase, I don't have anything to exotic. Some medium sized coral pieces, a lot of frags. Tangs, clowns, damsels, fairy wrasse. A couple anemones.

Thanks for the responses guys. Sorry for the delay, I was on vacation for the past few days. Haddonisreef, I have a medium sized rose bubble and a small rainbow bubble tip.
