I also used 1/2" conduit. I went to Lowes and got a full piece and they cut it for me, then I used their bender, which all stores have right by there. I bent them both the same distance out at picked up a couple conduit mounting brackets. Use some 1 1/2" to 2" screws and mounted them into the studs if they line up, our run a 1x6 board across the wall and mount the conduit to that. Measure out over your tank, and make your final cut to the conduit. Another idea you might like is getting some rustic looking shelf brackets that come out enough over the aquarium and build a shelf over. get some wood and cut to size and stain to match other wood work in your house. I used to have a aqua space light hanging over my tank and it worked out very well. The shelf looked so nice that it is still there today.
