So I was thinking about upgrading to a MAG 24 on the 120g, but wasnt sure if my returns would be able to keep up with it. This would be replacing my MAG 12, which has a flow at 5' of 800 GPH. The MAG 24 at 5' is 1600 GPH. Does anyone know what the flow rate would be on a 1" MegaFlow drain is? Just wondering if this would be able to keep up. It would be fitted from a 1" outlet nozzel on the pump to incorporate with my 3/4" return lines...and there is a ball valve to reduce flow slightly.

My tank came with a MAG24 on the return, The guy that sold me the setup had it with one 1" drain for many years an never had a problem. When I set it up I used the 1" for the return pump and the two 3/4" holes for the drain for a bit of safety from snails clogging the drain.
I belive the size will work for you but the best advice I can give is DO NOT GET A MAG24. It is VERY noisy, It was vibrating my house and filling the downstairs with a constant Hummmmmm. After running for a bit the seal gave and leacked every were; repair was not posible for many reason I don't want to get into. So I started to run it summerged WOW that thing runs hot and warmed my 300g tank fast, and being under water did not help the noise at all. A MAG12 is a good pump but a Mag24 is not. There are many better pumps that size both sumurged and exteranle that are in the same price reange and you will be much happyer with. I replaced mine with a Reeflow pump will never run a submerged pump externally again.

Well I bought it anyways to give it a try. It was brand new and only $100. So I think it was worth trying out for that price. I am not to worried about heat as I am running LEDs and usually have my heater running during the summer anyways. And I think I can make some kind of padding to keep the vibration down. I will let you guys know here in about a week or two once I get it set up.

Why not make a herbie overflow, I'm assuming you have a 2 split overflows now. You can have a full siphon be your bigger drain, the open air be your smaller drain. You can have your returns from the other overflow. Make sense?

Umm not really...think I might need a picture to understand what your talking about.

On a side note...IT WORKS! Made the idiot move of testing it in my water change barrel in the living room while I was mixing fresh salt water. Well the force from the pump lifted it from laying on its side to vertical. Think it put about 5 gallons of water all over my living room ceiling before I could flip the switch to turn it off. Im drenched!

I have three of the brs sound dampeners zip tied to my mag 18. Helps with the vibration a lot for only about 12 bucks. The only problem you might have with the 24 is the water sound over the overflow. My 18 spills water over the overflow at a high rate of speed.

The herbie overflow is cool! Reef central " aka evil empire" has a thread on it. I am using one on my 120 and had one on my 75. Absolutely silent!

I have an 18 on my 75g, I think it would be fine as long as there is more than one overflow, herbie, or bean animal style.
