Anyone have a trap success story catching a hiding Mantis? Looking for brand recommendation or maybe a loaner trap. I haven't seen him but I hear the pop-pop each evening an hour or two after lights-out. Thanks for the help.
Wow... that video makes me so sad for all the arthropods that guy put up against that giant mantis. I have a soft spot in my heart for crustaceans...Seems like you need to keep mantis shrimp out of tanks that have just about anything else live in them though.
While we're on the topic of mantises and pistols though, is it true that they can break glass?
Not really, Wicked has a mantis tank with clowns in it.
That's the rumor. Another rumor is that they can break Nalgene!
Dracx, maybe you can lure him out with crustacean bait. Be really sneaky though, they have the best vision of any animal...so the scientific articles say.
No major excavations and no livestock losses (inventoried my fish, snails, hermits and shrimp). Most of the fish avoid that side of the tank but I figured it was because of the lack of swimming space. Without knowing which rock to remove, any other ideas? Do traps not work?
I trapped a peacock mantis shrimp (medium size) in a Nalgene bottle when I was in Thailand to show my family what was making all the clicking sounds at low tide. It punched right threw it and got its puncher stuck in the in the crack that it made. I had to push it pincher back through just to release it back into the reef. Aint no rumer, they can do it.
That's crazy... so if they really can do that then there's no real way to keep them and be completely confident that they won't break your tank. Unless maybe you had really thick glass?
Yes, came in on a live rock purchase. Haven't spotted him yet and no burrows that I can see. But, I can't see everything in my tank, may be in the back somewhere. The search goes on.
They are highly intelligent creatures. Their vision exceeds our own even. There are a few members with mantis tanks, don't even have thick glass. If provoked, they will go ape poop on your tank, so don't do it. There its a vid on youtube where a guy plays with his mantis with a laser pointer.
