Ace hardware has it. It is hydrochloric acid. It is very safe for your reef if you have some residue left over, but not so much if you get it on you, so just be careful. Most pool/spa places will likely have it.

A gallon is like $8 and it goes a lot farther than vinegar. Once diluted with water, it becomes completely benign - you can add it directly to your tank if you need to lower the PH (all kalk users should have some on hand for emergencies). I just glug in some to a brute really scientifically and soak stuff in it and then pour it into the rocks around my house. I don't know for sure, but I think that a gallon of Muratic would be equivalent to 8-10 gallons of vinegar.

Unlike vinegar, it will not add carbon source to your tank if you don't rinse well enough.

What I was trying to say: dangerous out of the bottle and it gets less dangerous the more that you water it down.

Home depot sells a 2 gallon pack for around 12 bucks that's where I get mine. I I use a 1:4 water ratio I believe

1:4 is what I use for vinegar. 1:20 is more like it for Muratic... or stronger for really stubborn stuff. I have used it 1:2 for a minute or two on really clogged up pumps and then I dilute it down further for an overnight bath.

You can clean anything in it that you would have in vinegar. Just rinse it off and you good.

Keep it off your skin and stuff.

i use muratic acid on the Englewood fountain. We use it to scrub the cement and the fountain as well as lower the PH. I can tell you to BE VERY VERY CAREFULL when using it to do the best you can to not breathe the vapors as they are just as dangerous as the liquid.

So it sounds like rubber gloves and a mask are a good idea when using this stuff.

a 1:20 acid-water ratio sounds substantail for cleansing mix containers

How much should I put in 100 gallons of water to clean rock?
I use a 10:1 concentration of water:acid to clean rocks. Brown nasty rock comes out white after a 10-15 minute dip. I find it works better if I add half of the intended dose to the water, wait 5 min, then add the rest. Otherwise it bubbles over pretty fast and seems less effective, but I suppose a larger bin would solve that problem :p

yes they are great ideas. that stuff can be harmful.. from personal experience i would suggest goggles too but thats just me, a 1-20 should be good, when we calc and water deposits off the cement at the fountain we usually run a 1:4 ratio, and if its realy tough we go to 1:2.

do you need to do anything other than rinsing on the rock when using the stuff? I might dip all the rock for my tank in some before I redo the aquascape.

Keep in mind it kills everything on the rock...though with those huge sumps plus the other tank that's not a huge issue lol

I just rinsed in RO water. You can then check the pH to make sure it won't crash the system...

+1 just soak them in ro water and be sure all the acid is out. the acid works really really well at lowering ph fast

I'm using dry rock for the new scape, so I'm not worried about killing stuff. None of the old rock is going back in.
