Hey guys I just set up my 55 and things aren't going as planned, first it smells horrible I can't stand it. The water is heated and circulated and it had a pretty dark green tint after day one. It's clearing up but way to slow and the smell it's getting worse I have a gfo and carbon reactor set up and I'm trying to get a protein skimmer going but have no experience with them and I'm failing any help would be appreciated. Also I've tried two skimmers with no luck, one creates way to many bubbles the other one doesn't have any bubbles.

With the skimmers are they brand new? Sometime there is a break in time frame for the skimmers. Was the rock from another reefer or a lfs? Was is the rock cured? What about some type of bacteria supplement to help jump startthe cycle, several different options. I have used seachem's stability and bright wells microbactor7.

If it is smell of death I would agree that the rock may be to blame and time would "fix" the smell.

The rock came from a guys barn I got it for free and it wasn't very clean I used an air pump to do my best and clean it but it was very hard I had no clue it would do this. Both skimmers are used I've just never used one and thought it was straight forward guess not.

Time and patience my friend, get acquainted with your skimmer, it takes time to fine tune.

Green tinge, plankton bloom? Smell = rock, skimmers, too many bubbles = skimming too wet, not enough = various issues (is your air line clogged?). I'm busy currently, but I'm free later on. Pm if you want some help.

Does it smell like eggs? Keep using the skimmer you got from me amd slowly adjust the air flow down over the mext 24 hours.

Do you have any cycling additives? I can hook you up with some, but you know its a drive.
