I currently have 2 purple fire fish, one snowflake clown, a watchman goby and a high-fin goby. What are some different fish that are hardy, reef compatible and if possible tank bred. I was looking into a red dragonet (tank bred) and a scooter blenny. Any thoughts? I only want to add about 3 more fish. Since I've recently have had some deaths I've learned my lesson on the harder species to care for and would like just a happy community. Does anyone have any input on the Potter's Angel. I recently lost mine and I'm almost positive it was because of the tank requirements it needed. I've read many different opinions about this fish. Any input? :cupcake:

I got your texts Nadia, sorry I haven't replied yet! I work everyday, then classes or meetings 5 nights, and volunteer on Saturdays, ugh! I need to slow down, not enough time for fun.

Potters Angels are not considered totally reef-safe, I'd avoid. I have only pretty basic hardy stuff, you can try: Ocellaris/Percula Clown pair, Coral Beauty, Flame Angel (some can get nippy or aggressive eventually though, incl. with other dwarf Angels), Royal Gramma, three Chromis, OrangeStripe (Randall's?) Goby. I've learned other hardy basic fish include: Tangs (vegetarian food needed), Gobies, Blennies, Cardinals. My Firefish Goby got occasionally nipped by my Raccoon, but seemed to be doing fine, then dead one day. I feel horrible for not isolating them sooner. They're jumpers too, gotta keep some eggcrate over your top. For Wrasses, do your research on each type, which are reef-safe, which can go with other wrasses, etc.

There are a ton of threads about becoming successful with Dragonettes/Mandarins. Just takes patience, luck, and a steady pod population. You also can find good Youtube vids on tricks to "train" them to eat non-live foods, pellets, etc. Worth a try in a tank with other non-feisty fast-eating fish. Otherwise they can get outcompeted for food.

Other Clowns (Maroon/Skunk/Tomato/etc.) can be/become aggressive so be wary. Some Basslets/Dotties/Anthias you gotta probably avoid, can be or become very aggressive/territorial. Do your research on each choice you might be looking at. Hit me up on specifics and I can help you find the info pretty quick. Butterflies can be intermed. level care with food requirements. Hawkfish are cute and have great personality, but can eat some crabs/inverts. My Raccoon Butterfly is great and healthy, but started continuously nipping at my RBTA's bases, so I put him in an isolation chamber inside the tank until I can setup my 29g Clown/Nem tank.

Side-note, just with my experience, might wanna avoid a Copperband Butterfly. Other people have had success but not me. They are notoriously difficult to keep alive for lengths of time, and get to eat properly. I got one from Elite and he lasted two days. My water quality is great, acclimated slowly, as are all my other fish, shrimp, Torch, Nems, & Toadstool, Xenia, all happy & healthy for months, wide variety of foods, lots of hiding places. Not sure why the CBB died. Hope no one was picking on him, dunno...

Nobody mentioned wrasses? Most of the fairy wrasses are pretty hardy, and are definitely active fish. If you like to watch pairs of fish display at all, a m/f/f trio of fairy wrasses would be an awesome addition.

I've been really happy with my midas blenny. bright yellow with big blue eyes. Its tail is hypnotic flapping around. I recommend this. Also purple firefish in a small school

Thank you so much Praveen!! I hope we can caught up soon I'd like to pick your brain about a couple things! Yeah, I tried the Potter's Angel (not my decision) and it got infected, infected my clown and then died. It did great in the tank for 2 weeks (other then making my other clown commit suicide and scaring the fire fish). It wasn't bullying or picking at any coral it was real peaceful. I really like the gramma and that other suggestion about the fairy wrasses sounds awesome too. I was actually looking at a fairy wrasse. I'd like to stick with tank bred fish for the most part. The 2 little fire fish I have now are good little guys, but I'm always scared that they may jump. They were one of the first pairs I put in and have gotten really cozy in the tank. Now that they are the only 2 fish that come out during the day they are looking a little lonely. They weren't too thrilled to see the clown go in the QT yesterday either. I had success with my last mandarin eating prepared foods. It took some monitoring and time to see his eating habits, but he was eating right out of a glass set in the tank with food for him. Those are the most gorgeous fish to me and I really want another one. It was so cool watching him flutter all over the tank.

Agree on Mandarin's being one of the original "most beautiful reef fish I've seen" from when I just started in the hobby. Interestingly I've never owned one because the success rate back then was very hit or miss, especially for lengths of time. Hope to hone my skills with current setup, then tackle a Mandarin in my upcoming small tank (w/ appropriate fuge/pods).

There's a lot more knowledgable resources than I, here on MASC, and can chime up or PM ya. Especially about your Fairy Wrasse. To get you started anyway, since I've never owned a Wrasse...

I've never had any problems with mandarins. My target did great for over a year until a rock crushed him, and my psychedelic has been doing great for over a year! I just have cheato in a refugium to keep pods thriving.

That's awesome!! I'm so jealous you have a psychedelic! Gorgeous fish! Can you post a pic of him? Does yours eat any prepared foods?

There he is trolling for food as usual!

Here's the food source. If you look after dark there's a ton of pods in there! Some get to be about the size of a Cheerio.
