ricordea problem?

MAybe 4 months ago I recieved a yellow ricordea from the MASC frag swap. Everything started great, but then within the last couple months my nitrates got a little high from over feeding. I realized something was wrong when the yellow ric began to shrink and the base of the ric turned from the normal greyish color to almost clear. the yellow "bubbles" shrank as well. I did notice it has 2 mouths and might be trying to split. Ive cut back the feeding and my nitrates are back to 0 and the tank looks great, but the ric, and actually rhodactyl (sp?) mushrooms as well, will not recover. Ive since sent the ric to Todds tropical fish, to see if it can recover in one of his big tanks.

besides the high nitrate period, would anything else cause this? lighting? ive got another ric since the nitrate spike and its doing great.

I have come to notice mushrooms with to instense lighting will shrink up and not open. Put him under a ledge where the lighting is not so intense so he has to open up to get the light he needs.

Sometimes when a coral gets stung, or burned, or what have you, they just slowly wither and die, while others recover quite well, good luck!
Maybe try a lugols dip.

My rics were starting to shrink in my pico, I moved them to the 120 and they started doing great. The pico had all kinds of things wrong though. I blamed it on inadequate lighting though.

i cant really think of anything wrong with the tank. The lighting supports sps in the middle, but i know its low enough that zoas on the bottom reach a little. I had the ric on the bottom. once it started shrinking i moved it to a less lit area, and no change. hmmm

Wicked demon might have something with another coral stinging it. I have had a couple ricoridias move several inches across rocks to get away from larger paly-zoanthids. I assume they were getting stung. Someone told me the color of the ricordea dictated how much light the mushroom needs but I haven't seen much difference from playing with different light levels.

Also my rics like "dirty water" with more nutrients. Doesn't make sense to me. Has anyone else experienced rics growing better in dirty water?

Dirty water = water in my 28g nano without a protein skimmer. The ones in the 28g look better than the ones in my 125gallon tank with aggressive protein skimmer. It is less than scientific. Water flow is also lower in the smaller tank.
