rotifers

#1
So my Clarkiis are doing the dance...so I am expecting eggs soon. Anyone have or know of a place to get rotifers? I have been reading up on this, but this is the first time I have had fish breed. I have a 10 gallon tank, airstone and light for the fry. If you have any pointers about this as well as any guidance to keeping the rotifers alive and such it would be greatly appreciated.

yep keys has them.
I wouldn't worry about using a light for the first few days. Ambient light should be enough.

To keep rotifers alive, DON'T OVERFEED. I know it's tough to figure out how much to feed them, but
the best thing to do is feed just enough to lightly tint their water green and feed again when it clears up.
After the culture gets dense enough, harvest half the volume and refill the container with fresh saltwater.
I also culture my rotifers at a salinity of 1.020, no heater, no light, very light aeration.

I feed the rotifers a product from Reed Mariculture called RotiGrow Plus.
Any LFS that carries Reed products should be able to order it.

yep, and it's only a one liter bag hehe.

but I feed about 10 drops per day to each half gallon of rotifers I culture. It's extremely concentrated.
I feed twice a day so that's 5 drops per container for me each feeding.

If you wanted I believe you can culture phytoplankton to feed the rotifers.

That's a fact....you could culture phyto.

I stopped culturing phyto because it was taking all my free time to clean the containers and
it crashes a lot. I thought the price for the RotiGrow was well worth it......but I also use more
than most people will. Raising clowns means I need a lot of rotifers, so I need a lot of food for the
rotifers.

If you go the phyto route, you'll have to enrich the rotifers before feeding them to your larvae.
Nannochloropsis doesn't provide a good nutritional profile for growing larvae.

LOL.....that's something that each person has to answer for him/herself.

For me, it's MUCH cheaper. My time is very important to me since I'm running out of it quickly
because I'm getting old LOL.

Reed makes other products that would work in the short term.
I would try some of those first because you may find that you
hate culturing rotifers. I wouldn't want you to waste your money
on RotiGrow Plus when you could use a different cheaper product first.
I'll try and get the names of the products.....most fish stores carry them
if they carry Reed products.

hhm okay i was at elite and they said they didnt have anything. so yea if you could get a few names. Also if i hate culturing is the other option just to but the roti in a bottle? cause i bought some cause i was going to spot feed some corals. and its pricy for a little bottle. like 22.00

You need a huge amount of rotifers to raise a batch of clowns so a bottle of rotifers won't do.
Also, if they are in a bottle they are probably not live. Clown larvae need live rotifers for the first few days.

I think what you bought was probably called RotiFeast.
That's good for corals and other plankton feeders but it isn't alive so the larvae wouldn't even touch it.
I think the larvae are triggered to feed by the motion of the prey...among other things :)

You can feed rotifers a product called PhytoFeast. That's cheap and I'm sure Elite carries that.
