Runninig 2 danner mag 18's in series or parallel?

#1
I have just finished moving my display tank upstairs with sump in the basement, I used the head psi calculator and with about 16' of head I thought I would be ok with one mag 18 but I am not surface skimming enough, I have some surface scum in the corners, I've tried moving the returns around but I just don't have much flow coming out of the returns. My question is can I run 2 mag 18's in series or parallel to get more flow? I have a extra mag 18 for back up, and I'm going to order a mag 36. I have 1" return line all the way to 3/4" lock line return.

Thanks

My opinion is in series, temporary, it should work. You should consider the reflo high pressure pumps for that distance.

In my opinion 1" is too small for 3000+gph. Just my opinon

Does the 16 feet of head account for piping losses? If I recall correctly the Danner pumps (the mag 18 and even mag 36) are not high head pumps so even the mag 36, while it might work, it's not designed specifically for that application so looking at something like a pan world or a blue line or the reflo pump as recommended maybe your best bet.

Look at reef central and they have a headloss calculator that you can input piping configurations and select a vertical head distance and pipe size to determine the estimated flow from specific pumps.

I would agree the 1" piping for the higher flow rates will cause additional headloss and switching to a larger diameter piping will help you get more flow from any pump because of the reduced headloss due to piping friction.

Thanks for the advise. I did some research on the reeflo and bought the blowhole 2700. I couldn't redo plumbing without serious modifications to stand which is built in. Great pump! I have more than enough flow now and I'm only on the medium setting.

Thanks again.

I have that pump. It's a very nice little pump.
