Hello, I just finished reading an article about this proposed legislation, and although I am not entirely opposed, I feel I must comment. The primary causes of these corals rapid decline appears to be environmental, and classifying these corals as endangered seems a given. Every year we hear about more and more losses on the natural coral reefs, and this greatly saddens us all, but one must understand that declaring something endangered can not protect it from a changing environment. I have been involved in the aquarium hobby for over 20 years, I have been aqua-culturing corals in my home for about 6 years. In this time, the technology to keep difficult corals has grown exponentially, and hobbyists the world over are able to grow out and propagate an ever increasing number of corals. The vast majority of the corals in my tank were locally aquacultured, meaning that they were not harvested from the ocean, but grown by hobbyists here in landlocked Colorado. I feel that this hobby is the best chance of preserving corals that one day may otherwise become extinct. The cost of a federally funded program to the same end would be astronomical, yet as a hobby it places no burden on the federal budget and actually stimulates the economy. Any species of coral can at this moment be found flourishing in the aquarium of a hobbyist in any given state. It is for this reason that I ask you to limit the scope of this law to spare the aquaculture of endangered corals, that one day we may be able to repopulate the reefs with responsibly aqua-cultured corals.
