My fan failed and my tank got pretty hot, fish and cuc alive, but corals pretty sad. Pink birds nest turning white, frog spawn looks dead and so does my new torch:(, The question is, should I leave them in for awhile to see if they recover or pull them out.:wall:

I'd leave them in and monitor. Had a frogspawn loose half it heads down to skeletons, left it in, other heads still hanging in there 3ish months later.

Ya, I have seen corals come back from looking pretty dead. Unless there is visible decaying flesh I would monitor it for a while see what happens.

Drop some ice in bags to cool it off.
+1 to all of the above.

make sure your parameters are in acceptable ranges i would do a water change just to be safe.
I just did a big change about 25% on Sunday morning, the overheat happened Monday. Should I change again?

I wouldnt then unless there is alot of stuff dying off. Right now that would just add more uneeded stress. Main focus should be lowering the temp and getting it stable.

Yes I did get the temp down with bagged ice, thanks to the ice maker:). I am just keeping the lights off and when I put them on for awhile I am keeping the lid up and I have the Vortec churning up the surface water to keep things moving. The new fans are on the way, I did not even notice the fans in the hood had stopped working.

I am guessing about 2 hours before I noticed, about mid to high 80"s, just noticed by the touch of the water and the unhappy frogspawn. Started throwing in the bags of ice. Not enough to shock but brought it down in about 30 minutes I'd think.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. I don't have much at the moment but I would be happy to offer a few torch heads if you happen to roll through Highlands Ranch.

I feel your pain. I lost my first reef due to overheating. I had just moved home for the summer and had put the tank in the corner of my bed room...on the 2nd floor...south side of the house. (der, idiot move) I was out of town for the day and by the time I got home the tank was above 90.

Thanks, this one was purple and now is is just looking slimy. When thing are back to normal that would be great to get a frag. Are you coming to the DBTC? in Oct.

I'll have a scuba tank on my back that day. :) Maybe I can convince my house sitter (BIL) to attend on my behalf?

Mine look like these btw (http://www.douglasillustration.com/candycane.jpg)

Time for a controller!
would only help if the heater was a problem ...unless it also was a controller that sends you emails

Just the fans, otherwise everything probably would be toast, pardon the pun.
