last weekend I finally had some time to work on the LONG overdue projects, and take a few pics of the tank and its newest member.
If I am going to have nems dominate my tank, then I dont care if a fish nibbles on them! So I couldnt help myself when I saw this gorgeous Annularis Angelfish
I need better pics because the blue stripes on his yellow body are amazing!
Finally found and added a 50g frag tank in the fish shed, I told her this would be a great way to "recoup" some of our costs for this hobby.... muhahahahahahahahah
$150 new which was a bit steeper than another DIY project, but it was the perfect dimensions and I have been searching for months with no luck.
I didnt want to drill this tank for several reasons:
- I didnt have a glass bit/ didnt want to buy one
- With its location an overflow wouldnt be in the way
- had a few parts from an old overflow (weir and U-tubes)
Overflows are STUPID EXPENSIVE!!! Aint nobody got time for a $200 plastic box Also my first tank ran 2 years using an overflow and I never had trouble with it
So I built my own for $26
I found a darn near perfect sized food grade container at Target for $10 and picked up two bulkheads locally for $8
I wanted to have redundancy, so this is really a double overflow. To fit two U-tubes I was going to have to get creative with my dams and the tops of the bulkheads.
I opted to leave the bulkheads alone for obvious reasons.
Spent a LOT of time with the belt sander to get the two pieces of acrylic to fit snugly on the slightly tapered inside of the Target box and to get as close to the bulkheads contour as possible.
Thing were looking good... and then we ran into some issues.
My hands are fat, silicone sticks to everything, and my "extension nozzle" for the silicone failed.
So trying to ensure proper seals of the dams, but also trying to keep them straight...
Luckily this isnt on a display tank haha. I should have relied on my silicone extension and just glued one, let it dry, then glue the other dam.
So I had to do a 24h leak test
Whew, no leaks. Now just need to plumb them into my main drain. Again having redundancy on drains they each had to be separate Tees to the 2"
Grand total with tank, plumbing, overflow, foam, bulkheads, and silicone $200 ish
I have a flow question however... where do place the return spout? will it matter or do I focus more on power head placement? My gut tells me to have it on opposite side of tank from the overflow?
