pep shrimp? tang? butterfly? filefish? angel? all culprits...
That narrows it down. I only have a Pygmy angel out of your list. However the rows of damage are so symmetric that I think it wouldn't have been a fish, but maybe a crab. I do have a Sally longfoot, cleaner shrimp, and some hermits. I don't want to mount the rest of the acans until this is resolved.

Those lines are the skeletal structure showing thru the receaded/withdrawn flesh, not really an indicator of who is doing the damage.

If there was a predator present the acan would most likely be gone now, I would think water conditions or a pre-existing condition within the coral.

Shortly after I got the three different acans I switched tanks which shocked them with cold water (2 hours), low flow (20 hours), and no food (20 hours). This one was the only one that looked flat, however it was still eating somewhat. The other two (pictured below) look more puffed up and round compared to the other which had more of a triangle shape to it. I guess that the original prognoses that it died and was then consumed is probably correct. I'm hoping that I can salvage part of this Acan since there looks to be two heads on the side of the rock, but neither have feed.

They look like they can use some shade also
Shade? Interesting... They are currently in the frag rack about 6-8" away from my 4x24 T5 lights. Now that I'm mostly certain that they won't be eaten I can move them down into the sand, or somewhere midway between their current location and the sand.
