Black Spots Underneath Sand?

#1
So I've had this dark grey/black spot underneath my sand bed for a while now. It's about the size of a half dollar and doesn't seem to be getting any bigger or smaller. I've done a little poking about the internet and there seems to be mixed reviews on what it is and what ought to be done about it.

It isn't the sand itself because I can see between some of the bigger grains and it's definitely between them. Some kind of bacterial growth?

What are your opinions on what ought to be done about it?

id say if its ok if its not changing ...if it gets bigger than you have a problem ....could be a big one too!

Okay. I'll keep an eye on it. It's just almost irresistible to poke it with a stick or something lol

I wouldn't worry about much other than Hydrogen Sulfide developing in your sand bed. Really have only ever seen it in DSBs myself, but maybe you should pm Tripple T since he is the only qualified person on this site to say anything science related.
