Cons of a baffle less sump

I figured you meant the overflow, since plugging up the return (pump pumping water from sump to tank) should not cause any issue unless your tank has some design problems.

If 1 overflow clogs, the 2nd overflow (or drain from Tank to sump) should be able to keep up with your water flow. If you only have 1 overflow, you are SoL (I had this happen on my 40 gal, snail got caught in the overflow drain).

Walkprazz's point that overflow(s) failing will cause a much higher volume of flooding for a no-baffle sump is a great "con" to raise on the no-baffle sump question. But if one has dual overflows (or herbie / bean animal setup), and also a filter sock or equivalent, I don't see that a single baffle has any advantage? Over a no baffle sump?

Re: Cons of a baffle less sump

Honestly, you guys lost me. I don't see any difference between a 9753478547 baffle sump and a no baffle sump. The volume the sump can hold will be the same, if not slightly less with more baffles.

Its not about how much it can hold. When you add baffles, you create sub sections.

If for whatever reason you tank stopped draining to the sump from the overflow. With no baffle's the return pump would pump ALL of the water up to the tank, which more than likely would result in a flood.

When you have baffles, because its compartmentalized, it will only pump a small amount of water back to the tank, which would probably not flood your house.

Ok, so I've decided that I'm going to do an under/over baffle setup. The points of draining the sump to the tank is a good point. Now I just need to get off my butt and get it done.

Maybe I'll get these dang baffles in tonight, that way I can swap sumps again this weekend.
