Emerald Crab eating birdsnest

Wow...I have not seen this before. Wouldn't have believed it, had I not seen it with my own eyes. My emerald crab just went aggro on my birdsnest. He was stuffing polyps in his face two-fisted. They retracted immediately so he didn't do too much damage--but had I not seen him doing it, how much would he have destroyed?

I always thought emeralds were reef-safe. Anyone ever seen this before?
I banished him to the sump for now....
Strange....

Mine just die after a month or two, even though there is plenty of bubble algea to eat. I've never seen them pick at the corals though. Maybe some have personality like fish. I have a powder blue tang that eats leathers and some soft coral - definetely not typical.

I've had one pull tentacles off my duncan, pick polyps off birdsnest, and tear a zoa plug right off the rock it was glued to...and drag it into a cave when I tried to chase him away from eating the polyps.

Had him for about 4 months now. He's great on algae, but if I could catch him he'd be gone.

i had one that ate on my green toad, some time they can go bad. so i started feed him some meaty treats once a week that seems 2 make him happy and haven't had him attack anythng since.

Do you have a laser? Reasearching now as a friend of mine really wants to spend the money to get one to melt things in his tank.... I don't want to start a debate but was wondering if you had one.

Yeah I have. I love it! Its fun and it works. The one I am using is a 2200mw blue. I have played with the lower powered ones and they are def not as effective.

Well I got him in the sump for now...maybe I will give him another chance.....though my general rule is that if it molests my polyps, it's gone.

Hey question about that laser! I really want one. Do you need to be wearing goggles or anything to safely eliminate aiptasia?

Yes safety glasses are a must for anyone in the room. I burned my hand the other day just catching a little reflection off the glass.

Naw the laser works better than anything I've used hands down. I've heard mixed reviews on these wands sometime causing aiptasia to release spores. Thea laser does not seem to threaten them they just burn. Plus the laser will kill anything else in the tank that I don't want or can't catch. It easier to put on a pair of glass then to run an extension cord to plug in a wand. Each to there owni guess.

I could bring it to a meet the big problem would be the glasses get pricey and I only have two pair. Also I have never tried to use it on an acrylic tank I would be afraid the laser would yellow or burn the acrylic. It would have to be someone with a glass tank or I suppose we could just point down through the top.
