hey guys got this from offthedeepend's wife ....thought i would put it here because i am know where close to them ....pm her because i dont know if she is checking the the forums

ok guys, this is dillons wife amber, dillon is gone hunting and our son decided today that it would be a wonderful idea to throw packing peanuts in the fish tank cause he "wanted to feed the fishys" I can not get a hold of dillon because he isout of cell phone service so after a few min of panic i figured my next best option was to ask the people that he always talks to on here for help!!! In the sump his protien skimmer is bubbing like crazy and there a bubbles, suds i guess would be a better expination all over in the sump and coming the top of the protien skimmer. I do not know how to fix this because i do not know much about tanks!!! I know he will be heartbroken if he gets home and everything is dead, so if you can tell me how to fix this so I can do it that would be a huge help!!!!

packing peanuts shouldnt hurt anything as they are not water soluble. if they had chemicals on them then there is pretty much nothing you can do at this point. manually remove the debris from the tank and hope for the best.

kinda what i was thinking i told her to do a 20% water change if she was capable just in case since the skimmer is going nuts ...would be nice if someone could go over and check it out and see how it looks PE, stressed fish, maybe test water etc.

Depending on what type of packing peanuts, it may not be too big of a deal, although the foaming doesn't sound good...

Changing lots of water and running some type of Activated Carbon, PolyFilter, Purigen, etc would be the best course of action.

the tank looks ok its self, i took the peanuts out of there the skimmer is still bubbling like mad and the container up top fills with water (from the bubbles) in like a min, i have emptied it like 3 times, i will do my best at a water change if someone can walk me through it, i know the salt needs to be at a certain level on the hydrometer thing, but dillon is the one that always does this stuff lol, but i also now that his tank means a lot to him so asking for help on here was my only option. Now i kinda wish i would have taken notes all the times he has explained to me what he is doing. lol that would come in pretty handy right about now.

im a little scared to walk you through a water change ....but when you mix new water the salinity on the hydrometer thing should match what the what in the tank is currently (1.023-1.026 probably) you should use whatever water he normally uses for mixing probably not tap but could be put in as much as you take out ...but unfortunately that is probably way to simple there might be powerheads and sump pumps, heaters that have to be turned of as well at the right times .....and as far as the water you might better going to the local fish store ..its about a dollar a gallon premixed ....also a 20% water change may not be enough depending ....there really are a ton of variables and would be best if someone could come help you with it

ok thank you, i know that he uses water from the RODI (i think that is what its called) but i also know it takes a bit to fill up a 5 gallon bucket with that too!!! thus far the fish still seem normal, nothing obvious with the way they are acting anyways, i will see if i can get someone to come help, i know that dillon and mark (boogie) have talked a lot about their fish tanks and i think he prob knows the most about dillons, so i will see what i can do!!! thank you all for the help

Just an fyi, those little styro insulators that melt are a nightmare. I had some corals shipped in, they were packed in those and one of the bags broke. They all turned into this mush and stuck to everything. I don't know what they are made of but I am very sorry to hear they are in your tank. I personally will never use them to ship. I hope it works out with the tank.

You guys are all awesome and Dillon is lucky to have you guys as friends and a fish tank support team :) I am glad that when he comes home I do not have to tell him that his tank died while he was gone!!!! Thank you again guys,

Sorry I didnt get on earlier sounds like everyhting is working out now so that is good. THe little packing things are jsut made from corn starch so more or less they are really cheap fish food in large quantities. YOu could live off them in an emergency they tatse about like really stall bran flakes. Everythign should be allright with what you have done.
