A cheapo unit runs $5 at Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/7-function-digital-multimeter-90899.html). Testing the tank took only a few minutes.
Somehow I've never gotten around to putting a GFCI on my current system. I bought one when I built the new tank but rushed the final assembly and ended up with very limited access to the receptacle...the GFCI promptly got put on a shelf and forgotten about. I decided this morning to install it elsewhere on the same breaker instead. Duh. Installation = piece of cake.
Other fail-safe equipment...my $10 water alarms have saved me twice. The first time it was just a slow drip from a sump bulkhead. The second time occurred in the middle of the night and I ended up with 10 gallons of water on the floor (return pump quit while a snail was parked on the anti-siphon holes). [edit to add as it is relavent to a current discussion elsewhere on masc...I went from two to four holes after this incident.] If it hadn't woken me up, it would have been much worse.
