Kent tech M bryopsis experiment.

#1
Well after losing my battle with the dreaded bryopsis I've unfortunately resorted the chemical route. I started the tank new in January in hopes of finally having a successful sps tank and for the first few months we had nothing but success. The last few weeks have been painful. We had frags that were literally turning into mini colonies right before our eyes but the bryopsis slowly took over. Then to add insult to injury, cyanobacteria is feeding of the bryopsis and this where the real trouble is. It covers the tips of the acros and they slowly get ****ed and start to recede. I ordered a gallon of tech m and will keep the board posted on the effects of it. I raised my magnesium with my normal BRS magnesium and it did nothing so Ill slowly add this to raise to above 1800. 480 ml. A day in my 120 should raise it 72 ml. A day. I tested my mag at 1500 so in three days I should reach around 1800. Ive tried the normal stuff to eradicate this like gfo in reactors, water changes, manual trimming to no avail. Here we go, first dose in.

I'll tag along. I am about to begin a similar battle--only I could not get ahold of Tech M and instead got the Brightwell Hydrat formula. I will likely begin next week. Good luck to you.

From what I understand, the bryopsis hates the elevated mag levels, but what kills it is an impurity specific to Kent tech M?

Yes thsts my experience as well, kent M has some proprietary ingredients that the actual for its success. I tried treating mine with brs brand and had no luck at all.

I believe Kent is actually studying why their product is so good at killing off bryopsis, as of now nobody knows for sure, copper or some other trace element. So first day update, the cyano has visibly died off the bryopsis. This happened literally within hours of putting it in. I have an area in the back of the tank that doesn't receive much flow and it was covered in Cyano and that is disappearing as well. sand bed looks much better today as well. I've put in about 700 ml. so far and will do another 300 ml. when I get off work.

It has 14 components to it, I'm sure one of those has to be the ticket....maybe even two or more combined.

Three day update. Cyano is disappearing quickly and the bryopsis is losing its green color. Hasnt died yet bit doesnt look good. Unfortunately my powder blue has ich after doing this, he got stressed from the treatment for some reason. I hadnt heard of this happening before so it will be interesting to see what happens. Few pics.

How quickly are you raising your magnesium? You shouldn't be raising it more than 100 ppm a day. I had quite an uphill battle with bryopsis and I would declare myself a winner. I also used BRS MagCl and MagSO4. I still have a small amount that remains today, but it's significantly reduced. Maybe like 8 strands on a small portion of rock and some on a powerhead.

  1. Raise Magnesium 100pm a day until you are pushing +1600.
  2. Maintain around this level.
  3. I noticed my bryopsis was turning a brownish color from this, start doing some manual pruning.
  4. If you have a fish that eats nuisance algae, great. I happened to buy a foxface and he helped significantly with the pruning. He didnt care for the green stuff, but the stuff that was turning brown he devoured.
  5. You must have a good way to export nitrates. This is part of the reason bryopsis can live. You should have some chaeto that is ready to suck up all the nitrates that the bryopsis was consuming.

Thanks for the reply. I believe Im raising it about 100 parts per day. All cyano is gone now and the bryopsis is totally brown, no green at all. I will start to prune manually now and see if it grows back. Powder blue looked a little better this morning, we will see. Also, for anybody interested indoing this pay attention to salt levels, magnesium ups your salt.

Good point with raising salinity. It is cheapest to raise your salinity to 1.026 then up the magnesium.

While dosing this stuff should I take my carbon and gfo offline for a few weeks? Ive read that a few people have done it this way so carbon doesnt take up whatever in tech m kills the bryopsis.

Well it's been a week and here is what I know, so far almost all algae gone. There are little stalks still sticking up from the rocks but looks to be dying and hasn't shown growth yet. Unfortunately my acros took a hit despite trying to keep salinity levels in check, I lost a lot, live and learn. My zoas, clams, and Lps didn't seem to mind at all. I had to pull most of my sps out to try and save them so my frag tank is full of half dying corals. It's a shame because prior to this Satans algae outbreak I was kicking butt with the whole sps thing. Here are some pics.
