reef central?

What is going on over there? I tried to log on a couple times yesterday with no luck. Then today I got this message:

"Hello RC Members.

Sorry for the interruption. We'll be back in a little while, I need to check something.

To the folks spreading rumors and making up quotes, it's pretty sad when you have to resort to lying to try and get members.

The truth is that during an upgrade to mySQL we encountered an error that needed to be corrected. Unlike most sites, our database is very large and routine checks can take quite a long time to run. That's one of the reasons why we're one of the few sites that runs a full nightly backup. We'll be back this morning with virtually zero data loss. Sorry to disappoint the folks forging the emails.

Slander and libel are pretty serious things.
Cheers"

Well that seems to explain the technical problem.

As far as the slander thing, the only thing I can say is that yesterday I googled "reef central down" and found a site that was predicting the end of Reef Central and offering to take on members.

Sadly.... poor system management on their part. Things happen during upgrades, but it wouldn't have taken more than 3 minutes to pop up a page letting everyone know why they were down. That took almost 20 hours.

Once they did post an update, which was LONG overdue, they displayed their usual attitude. The lack of accurate information is their own fault. This fed speculation on many other sites with some attempting to take advantage of RCs mistake. And from a business perspective, that was a good move for those other sites.

Stuff happens with servers, networks and databases.... but leaving folks in the dark is just plain stupid. Chalk me up as one that doesn't buy the official version, though I'm sure that there is some underlying truth. Hopefully next time they'll test before they deploy, or have a back out or notification strategy in place.

ITIL and it's precursor CMM, exist for a reason......

Reef Central went down? I hadn't noticed. I haven't been there in over a year and don't plan too.

Screw Reef Central! Bunch of arrogant A-holes running the site and it's so darn crowded. Any thread you post to or any new threads end up pages and pages down within 24hrs.

Got kicked off there last year and never went back. Screw 'em!!

It would be tolerable if the mods were at least somewhat nice and professional. But they are like power hungry little czars. The pathetic thing about it? It's a reefing hobby for christs sakes. Get a life!!

Why does MASC need to have a club forum on other websites when we have our own right here? And as of recent there has been a whole lot more traffic on our site that on reef central for our organization. so i think we are taking off as a whole and MASC is just getting better and stronger every day every one posts here and not RC.

Bryan, Being on a forums can be a great thing. As it broadens our reach to people. That may or maynot know about us. Like it or not RC is huge. Rather than remove ourselves. I think we should join more. R2R comes to mind as a great resource for not only new members but information from some really big people in the industry. There are sponosors Like Cherry Corals, WCW, Fish N Frag, and many many more. But what most people don't know is the. The heads and staffs of these company's are active on the sight. They actually post and are part of the conversations. So you might have access there to information that may not be available anywhere else. So yea RC is a pain to most but look at it as a resource. The more places our name piops up the great reach we will have. If you notice with the large influx of people signing up on our site a large percentage of the are from out of state.

Just my thoughts and rambles here. Use or disregard as needed.

i agree it is nice when you can go to a forum and talk directly to the owners of some of these companies ....RC does have its place ....its not not a forum i choice to use unless its a complex question i cant get answered elsewhere or i simply would like more input

Why coulndn't there be an attempt to get some of those sponsors like cherry coral, etc. to sponsor us as well and have them participate in our own forums???

That is one of my personal goals for the club. To aquire more sponsors. First part of my goal would be getting more locals involved. While the sponsors we have are absolutely wonderful we need more.

While the big names are great. None will ever come close to doing what are local sponsor do. Believe me anyone can devote a few dollar here or there or a discount. The locals give us a even greater gift in sharing the personal experiences and their knowledge. Not to mention time!

Think about that

To respond to your statement about participation of topics on our forums that is like one on they can if the want. The larger and stronger the club gets. The wider diversity of people posting will increase. We have everything we need to go where ever the club wants. All we have to do is get involved!

Hey Bryan I had a great time Chatting with you today. I hope everything made it all home safe and sound. Deklin was a trip My wife really enjoyed talking to him.
