Shooting up-- Aiptasia

#1
Ok so I reported last week that I found an aiptasia on a frag a friend sent me. Well I found two more, very well-hidden, aiptasia but this time, I'd like to inject the suckers and do away with them. But where in the world do you get syringes? Also, where/how to you inject them? People here have told me to use lemon juice to do the trick. Can I poke them anywhere on the animal? Or do I have to be more precise and inject down the mouth? I'm flat-out intimidated by the thought of having these things take over my tank and I'm prepared to toss the frag if need be-- but thought i'd try the injection method.

Also, does anyone have any other methods of ridding the tank of these things?

Many thanks!

Just get aiptasia-x. it's like 6 bucks and comes with the injector stuff. I found one in mine and used that. Worked like a charm

Pickling lime works good to. Just add some water

In the head of the aiptasia the tentacles will grab on they think you are feeding it. If you need a syringe I can send you one.

That's really nice of you to offer! But I couldn't burden you with sending it. I'll try a local feed store-- I imagine they have something because people inject their livestock. If I can't find one this week, I'll take up you offer.. thanks!

I got my syringes at walgreens, the diabetic ones.

It's a great idea to turn off your pumps for 15-20 min, so it doesn't get blown all over. Cover the mouth first, then inject away.

Carefully with small tanks using kalk.

I dunno the company, but there are syringes made just for this application, they are $8 at AI, and many other LFS, it has a pretty long tip that is a larger diameter.
Kalk/lime method- First turn off all the flow in the tank, you want to cover the foot, then try to stick it in its mouth and completely cover the animal, leaving the tank with very little flow for up to 4 hours, by this point the white mass will have formed a shell, you can either suck this out with an airline siphon, or leave it. This is basically a base burn, and the PH leaches out in a couple hours making the kalk inert.

you want to cover the foot
I feel so stupid... cover it with what? Am I just spraying the poison around it and then in it?

4 hours seems like a long time for no water movement. I'm assuming it will be ok, just seems long!

What is this white mass? Is it the animals reaction to the poison?

Yes, it is a paste, that will cover the aiptasia, and burn it with a very high PH, the PH will leach out, and you do want a ~little~ flow after doing the treatment.

Oooook gotcha... I was confused as to how this stuff was going to hang onto or around the animal. It's all become so clear ;o) Thanks guys!! Now I just need a recipe for this stuff. I may just get aiptasia-x but anyone have a home recipe?

aiptasia x works great. comes with its own syrenge applicator.

If you want to go cheap, get a syrenge at king soopers / walgreens - very cheap. I forget what size I used, but the small one (5cc?). Ask the pharmacist to take a look at it and see if it looks like the right size. It'll come with a nice poky needle. put in a couple cc's of lemon juice. find your victim. now the hard part. stab it through the mouth or the stalk then inject about 1/2 cc into it. the trick is to actually get the fluid into the aiptasia. if you come in from the side and hit the stalk, it's too easy to go right out the other side. and you only get one shot a night with this method - if you miss or brush the aiptasia with the needle before you're ready, he'll disapear. if you get it right, he'll shrivel up and die in 12 hours. we got pretty good with this method when I first inherited my tank, but we were also able to move the rock around to get the best angle. lemon juice is an acid, so don't use more than 5cc in a 24 hour period. this method is kind of tricky. if you use aiptasia-x, they added some attractant to it so that the aiptasia actually likes the taste - it therefore comes out and surrounds the applicator instead of shrinking away. dude, you need to come on by and borrow mine and see if you like... I can even demo 'cause I have a couple that I've been putting off zapping....

salty-- if you're serious, I would love to take you up on that offer. I seriously only have two of these things and its on a frag I can remove from my tank. Would it be bad to use X on a frag in a container? I've scoured the other frag that looks just like this one and found nothing but will keep my eyes open for any new ones. I have no issues not going "cheap" but I never know what works in this hobby and what doesn't, so I'm hesitant to buy the product if a known remedy works. But if X is easier and the animal actually LIKES the poison, all the better.
