I have been having problems with some of the color in my corals. Well I was cleaning out my sump and found a freaken rusty nail in there. Do you all think that the nail could cause color loss? I have no idea how long it has been in there or even how long its been there.

OT, does any one have a glass cutting tool I could borrow?

That sucks. I have had a similar problem. Couldn't figure out the lack of polyp extension and corals looking like crap. I found a rusted razor blade. I would do a big water change and maybe refresh or start running carbon.

I have one as well but you can get one for mega cheap at homedepot or lowes. I think I got mine from hobby lobby for like 4 bucks.

I did a 20 gal change and started the carbon, PE has been down as well. I have another 25 gallons brewing now, so I will do a 5 gal every other day for a while.

Sweet, I didnt realize they were so cheap. I guess I will just run down and get one.

Isnt rust pretty much the same thing as gfo?
I am pretty sure it is. Iron is also a natural element in seawater. Copper is a different story. Don't let your kids put any penny's in your tanks.

Nails aren't pure iron, they are a range of steel alloy materials that can include a plethora of individual metals including iron but there could be copper (ring shank), zinc (galvanized), and yes rust on iron is ferric oxide, but that's not the only thing "rusting". Also many nail manufacturers use anti corrosive coatings that may not be reef safe.
Pure GFO is exactly that, ferric oxide.
+1 on running carbon for a few days and/or major water changes.

I didnt think about running poly, I think I have some laying around.

It is all the other stuff in the nail that I am concerned with, it looks like a large framing nail, those usually also have an oil based coating.
