IMO, as much as anything, if you have a tool that is somewhat accurate and you KEEP IT READING THE SAME, meaning you are keeping your salinity consistent, you are doing well. Even if a hydrometer is off by 2 ppm, but you keep it reading what it's reading every time you test/via tip-off etc. you are reefing well (is that a term?).
Too often I think we get caught up in specific numbers when the tools we use are close at best. Consistency is key for me (though I am not always on target--just sayin').
