Algae issue help!

#23
We just went through an awful hair algae problem. We tried everything mentioned above with no luck. I removed rocks and scrubbed, removed rocks and let them die, sea hare, lawn mower blenny, urchins, all kinds of crabs, you ge the picture. I was about ready to just take down the tank. After 9 months, we tried a fox face and he had the whole tank picked clean in 5 days. I don't think every fox face will do it, but you may get lucky! Just put that one on yor list of ideas if you get desperate.

Okay so I'll say it: Why is the hair algae growing in the first place? You said your parameters are good but that doesn't tell us what they are. I'd like to hear what your phosphates and nitrates are actually at (and if you know what they were at before this started, that would be good too). The algae growth could easily be masking a water quality issue by taking up most of the nutrients though. The problem is, you can add a bunch of animals to eat this, or you can scrub your rocks, but it will probably just grow back. (Or the excess nutrients will promote some other algae bloom.)

Your photo doesn't look like bryopsis but I would do a quick google search and make sure that's not it. If it is bryopsis, the easiest solution is Kent's magnesium supplement.

+1 for emerald. Have only one in each of my nano's and they both were relentless until it was gone. My algae came in from some early LFS frag purchases.
