Ya, had considered Aquaforest, but they are a bit more expensive. If enough people prefer that one, we can set it up, but I for one want the cheapest one right now, because its for getting my big tank started, and cycling. So, dont need the best salt for that at this point.

Still kind of working on this. Although the main snag is that none of the distributors want to do a group buy anymore, mainly because all the salts use MAP pricing and when one starts advertising one that is not a MAP price, they get all upset about it. I might be able to setup a group buy still but we will need to figure out how to not make the price public knowledge, and still get people to join in.

Don't advertise who the vendor is, pick it all up and have people pick it up from your house.

I still buy a pallet of salt every few years for below what Chewy and the other low-price online vendors sell for (not all are MAP) I don't tell people where I got it. I pay cash too.

Buy a non-MAP salt like Instant Ocean.

If you just need it for cycling, you can decrease the salinity to like half of the normal (17ppt vs 35ppt) amount and you don’t have to use as much salt mix and it increases the cycling time. I just watched the dr. Tim’s macna video on cycling and he said that lower salinity allows the bacteria’s cell to not have to expend as much energy so that it can reproduce faster.

There are other things to consider than just bacteria. If people get smart and cycle with diverse microfauna, then the sponges, worms, pods, stars, etc. all will want reef quality water. Of course Dr. Tim's main concern is about bacteria, but that is just one small piece of the picture for a diverse and thriving reef tank. Some people still want to use products like grunge, IPSF, etc. to cycle a tank in addition to bacteria... so if you are one of those, then best to ignore Dr Tim on this one.

Amazon has IO for $40 a box right now, if you all want to do a "group buy" that way... bags are a dollar cheaper.

$40 for the 200 gallon box or $9 for the 50 gallon box. Even cheaper.
