+1 to photography.

+1 to DIY sumps

+1 to DIY culture stations (could do a whole thing with phyto and pods)

Plumbing might not be a bad one either.

I would like to know how to run all the cables and cords and clean them up. I have so much cables and cords from equipment that it is like a birds nest under there. Plumbing sumps and how to keep them quiet is another one I'd suggest.

Thank you all for the awesome. awesome suggestions for demos and DIY micro sessions for Frag Swaps - KEEP them coming please!!!!

* While I myself would love to see a photography demo done by someone with some "expertise" Im not sure how we can implement it and make it work in a .5/.75 hour time slot at a swap. Would require us either to setup a complete tank with water, leds/halides and corals and have a projector/laptop setup (I assume) to show post processing work needed in a program like light room. Again a great idea but might be difficult to achieve at a swap with limit supplies and time. I think this might be better served in a completely independent meeting where thats all we do. The BOD will certainly discuss all the options for this and see if we can make something happen here soon, some how some way and somewhere.

We could always use a frag tank from one of the vendors if the demo is done at an event similar to reefed. No need to set up a dedicated tank.

I certainly would agree this should be a viable option, however......not sure there are many vendors who will want to stop sales for 20-25% of their sales time so we can take over their space (not sure I blame either and not speaking for anyone in particular or for every vendor either). We certainly can look into this option and see if anyone would be up for that.

On the other hand another option might be: If there happens to be a club member who was up to the challenge of bringing all the supplies (MASC helping where it can) to setup a temp demo tank with lights and corals (maybe a 10g or something) we would def not say no!!!

* I have a projector, laptop and can get light room if we end up going this route.

Well another thing to consider is who would do the demo. I can think of only really 2-3 ppl in the club that take really stunning tank photos, but none are experts or pros, so we would have to arrange for one to come speak at an event. Although I too would love to do a photo class, but think that maybe that would be for a meeting that was entirely focused around tank photgraphy

Another line of questioning would be to see which speakers folks would like to see present at upcoming events. Is MASC still part of MASNA? That allows you to take advantage of the Speaker Program. CORAL can help as well.

Food for thought.

The MASNA speaks program looks like it would be a good option for the club to look into. I would like to see the directory of speakers.

Yes we are MASNA members and we have recently tried to receive reimbursement before (Scott Fellman Reef Ed 2013) but failed to read that the request had to be submitted prior to event, not afterwards. We certainly are game for trying to bring in some speakers again from the MASNA speaks list and add those back to our event schedules. We also would certainly appreciate any and all help from CORAL (in addition to what they have already donated) in helping us pull in some big named/ hot topic speakers for sure! Thank you for the offer to help/support un in getting speakers again Rob and CORAL Team!

I will work on posting up a list of the speakers this weekend from their website. Probably will be a separate thread so be on the look out for that.

Just gonna chime in on the photography thing...

I don't want to "shoot it down" as an idea...but it does need a full meeting or multiple classes/sessions to cover the topic. Even for those with years/decades of experience with their cameras who may be regarded as semi-professional photographers...photographing reef tanks is an entirely different animal. There are basics such as reducing/eliminating flow and aperture settings that work...but the bigger issue is always white balance. Unfortunately, adjusting white balance is going to be different for every camera and every tank.

It's something that would be feasible for a meeting dedicated to photography where everyone can bring their cameras and ask questions...and maybe even follow-up with a 2nd meeting/session on post processing. There's just so many nuances to taking the photos and a large spread of experience within the club that cramming a class into a 30 minute session would almost be a disservice.

In college I spent hours a day in the darkroom, and shot literally 100s of portraits with everything from film DSLRs to large format cameras. I was able to do that after taking 1.5 years of photography classes...and am still left scratching my head at times on photographing some tanks (especially under LEDs). I'd be willing to help out with a "photography class", but am by no means a professional photographer, or a teacher lol. I honestly look at my reef pics and think they look like poop at times...and want to blame my 8 year old 10MP camera...but in all honesty it just takes A LOT of time and experimentation to get impressive pics from our tanks. :)

Definitely willing to help by teaching the basics...but can't promise to impress :)

could not agree more, every set up matters, different lights make differences, cameras, the whole thing is just crazy, even changing from my 57g to a little 20g frag flat, though I kept the same lights and everything threw off the white balance on my Nikon. I just gave up and have resigned to take mediocre pictures until I get my 180 up and going haha
