Gate valves offer more control and precision to control flow vs the general purpose ball valve which is truly better for either open or closed

IMO A ball valve will be just fine for a return or bypass T since you don't need much precision. Now if you are running a line to a reactor or skimmer from a single pump fed manifold you will prob have better have better success with fine tuning the feed vs ball valve.

Again just my opinion

I am just using a valve to slow down the flow to the fuge, that's pretty much it. Should I be concerned about it?

No I think the ball valve will be more than fine for that.
