So lost 3 more fish today my hippo tang is on his last fin. If I wanted to freshwater dip him to get ich off of his gills so he can breath. How long would I do it for.

A couple of important things when doing a Fresh Water Dip:
Make sure the temperature is the same as the display tank.
Make sure the PH is buffered up to the same level as the display tank.

After doing that, the dip should last about 2-5 minutes max, or until the fish starts looking stressed. Ie. Gasping, floating on the surface, laying on the bottom, etc. If that happens, get them out and back into the tank.

The Osmotic shock of Specific Gravity change is less stressful on the fish than the PH or temp shock that may occur.
The PH level of Freshwater 7-7.5 ish is 10x as acidic as normal SW levels at 8.3, and can eat the slime/mucus coat and some scale and gill structure right off of a SW fish, leaving it wide open to further infections, etc.

I'm sure there were previous threads to this one, but please tell me you don't have inverts in there.

Unfortunatly this is how it goes sometimes, and it is the reason many people get discouraged and quit, hang in there buddy, you just added a bunch of fish a little too quick, and you are having some BAD luck as well, either way I bet you are learning a lot, and next time wont be as traumatic.

Hippo tang died this morning he was 6" really nice so all I left is some chromes purple fire fish and half dead lawnmower blenny. I thought this procedure would save fish not watch them die.

Sorry that this comes so late but I've used Garlic Xtreme in the past. I know it say's it a "food suppliment" but it has cured ich and popeye on fish I've had in the past. I works quickly too with no harm to anything in the tank... Just a thought for the future...
