Introducing a new nem

Okay so I acclimated my new nem over the course of several hours this morning and it has filled up nicely, but how do I get it out of the cup. I submerged the plastic cup and it is sitting nicely on the bottom of the tank held by a couple of rocks but the little bugger hasn't moved in hours. How do I coax it out?

Introducing a new nem

You can slowly and gently use your finger to release the foot but there is a chance you can rip it and harm the nem. They will move on there own if they are unhappy in the spot they are in. I have pointed a power head at one of my nems before and that coaxed it to move.

I know I don't want to mess with the foot if I can avoid it. I guess I'll just find a way to wedge the cup and hope that it comes out over the weekend. I didn't want to leave a cup in the tank the whole weekend and end up having it flying around in there.

you can try the ice method, or the light method. or the hanging method. the light method i have never had work, some people say it wont even work on nems. the ice method is you rub ice on their foot to entice them to detatch, and hanging them over the tank so just their tentacles are touching the water, good luck

It didn't want to come out so I wedged the cup in the rocks and we will see where it is on Monday.

Blow-torch would probably work too, but it may change the water temp and you'd have to re-aclimate.

Or, you could try aiming a powerhead at it, and it should start walking away from the current.

Funny you say that the social studies teacher said he saw Bear Grilles purify water in a plastic bottle over an open flame and thought that would get it to let go. We tried purifying water in a plastic bottle over the burner but left the nem in the cup. The plastic didn't burn though!
