Well...things ended up not going so well with the chromis. I may be new to reefing...but in over 15 years of knowledgeable fishkeeping, I've never lost fish so quickly.

Lost one chromis over the second night, rather unexpectedly, as it wasn't the fish with the tattered fins and red gills that dropped first. Went another day and everyone was still looking healthy and swimming...the one sickly fish had even started eating. On day 4 I noticed one fish had a square-shaped red spot on his side; I suspected a bacterial infection, but wanted to keep an eye on things before jumping the gun an treating the tank, as I had already added prazipro 2 days before since everyone was eating. The next morning when I woke up 3 chromis were dead on the bottom of the tank; the remaining 2 looked fine. I had been testing throughout this time, and the water checked out. Ammonia - 0, nitrite - 0, nitrate - 2.0...I also dosed a little prime in the tank on Day 1 and added it back in with the daily water changes to make sure any ammonia that did end up in the QT wouldn't be toxic, and saw no signs of stress from ammonia...no change in color, no rapid breathing, no red gills.

Looking at the 3 fish that died that morning, and all 3 of them had the same red square/vertical streak on their side. No aggression was seen between fish prior to this, and there wasn't a single nipped fin in the tank. I also took care to slowly drip in my new salt water to avoid any rapid changes in parameters...so I didn't suspect a temp/salinity fluctuation either, and those parameters remained stable as well. So, at that point, I knew it was a bacterial infection, and suspected I was seeing uronema as the vertical streak on the side looked exactly like the pics I came across prior to picking these guys up, and the fish died rather suddenly with no warning. After pulling the 3 dead fish, I waited about 30 mins to feed the other 2 and they didn't take to the food at all. :/ They were both actively swimming though and seemed OK (no lesions), so I figured maybe it'd be worth trying some formalin when I got home from work that day to see if they responded.

When I got home, one fish was swimming upside down, the other was laying on it's side...both had lesions appear while I was at work that were not present in the morning. They were both goners within a few hours of getting home.

So...yea. A little frustrating to say the least, lol. I think I'm going to stay away from chromis for a bit, as I had heard that they were coming in with uronema with some frequency in recent months...I thought maybe trying something other than the standard blue/greens would allow me to dodge that bullet, but I guess not. This makes 2 botched attempts at getting chromis in the new tank, both hindered by fatal bacterial infections. On the one hand, I almost wonder if skipping QT and tossing them in the tank could have saved a few...but at the same time, it would've sucked even more to have whatever caused their death (whether infection or the uronema parasite) end up in the main DT and knock out all of my livestock with the first swing in parameters/power outage/temp fluctuation after the tank was established.

The build is going to be on hold for a bit while I figure out my stocking list again. I think I'll be adding my current 4 healthy fish to the DT after a round of prazipro in their current tank...I've had them for over a year now so hopefully things start to run a little smoother. Once I get those fish moved in, I'll use the old nanocube as a QT since it's been established for over a year as well; I'm leaning towards picking up a pair of clowns and a pair of mandarin gobies once the pod population is established, but we'll see. In light of my bad luck starting out I think I'm going to avoid any potentially difficult fish.

The sand and rocks are mostly nice and brown now...with some cyano popping up in spots and green algae starting to show up on the glass...

So I shook off the QT loss and slowly started adding CUC.

Nothing new...been lightly dosing phyto to help encourage an increase in my pod population before I add my insatiable wrasses and diamond goby ;)

I originally only ordered a pack of about 500 mixed pods from reefs2go...which wasn't much given the size of the tank, but I didn't want to struggle with keeping them alive since the tank had no other life (aside from chaeto) at that point. The copepods seem to be multiplying fairly slowly...I had hoped to see more crawling around on the acrylic by now, but they're definitely still around. The amphipods on the other hand have exploded...I regularly see them "paired up" and breeding, and when I dose phyto they seriously swarm out of the rockwork. Here's a quick vid of a few still scurrying around several hours after feeding the tank. Pretty boring compared to fish vids...but hey...it's something.

I think the impatience has passed, and I'm actually enjoying taking my time with the build at this point. I just got an Apex in the mail yesterday, and will probably work on getting that hooked up to the network and running on the tank within the next couple of weeks...it's a daunting task to say the least. I hate network setups.

Re: Jahmic's Tasty Cubed Reef Recipe

Big boy water change day.

Tank hits the 7 week mark tomorrow...cyano never got too bad, and is starting to recede everywhere except the rock sitting 6" under the light. CUC is munching on it in places...but has mostly been focusing on knocking out the few small tufts of hair algae that pop up...the GHA is pretty much gone now. Pods are definitely swarming with the addition of phyto 2-3 times a week for the past 3 weeks, and ghost feeding the tank almost daily over the past month hasn't led to any serious algae blooms. Nitrates have been sitting steady at somewhere below 2...even with this salifert kit it's hard to say for sure how low they are, but I'm fine with it.

My skimmer is still pulling a little wet, and mostly only pulls anything out after dosing phyto and shutting the skimmer down for 2hrs or so after dosing. Chaeto is exploding in the fuge, and also crawling with pods...that PAR38 is doing a great job. I was able to grow out and give away some dragons breath, and will probably add some more this weekend.

All this to say...I think the tank is ready for fish. :)

Leaning toward a small shoal of juvenile anthias. I'd like to get them to settle in, then start adding my current fish about a month later: diamond goby, yellow coris wrasse, chalk basslet. My lubbocks is going to Dave (Dym) to help with his flatworm problem; I'll replace him with another sp. of fairy wrasse, then finish up the stock list with a pair of clowns.

Do you know what kind of anthias. I did a lot of research on them and looks like you need at least four of them(5-6) being preferred . I tried 3 and once sexual order was established the male was to much for the two ladies.

I'm gonna go with some Bartlett's. I've been researching them over the past couple months as well; I was initially torn between chromis and anthias...after that chromis attempt failed, I decided to give the anthias a shot. I do plan on adding 4 to the tank...I considered 5 but don't think I have room for that many in my tank.

There's still a good chance that I get more than one male out of the group of juveniles...I'm hoping that with adding 4 there's at least a chance of them developing into 2 males and 2 females and I can avoid a 3 male : 1 female disaster, lol. I figure if I get 2 and 2 then the aggression should still balance out a little...I'm hoping my tank is conducive to avoiding multiple males though. My scape doesn't really allow for the line of sight to be broken very easily; given the shape of the tank and the open scape, I'm thinking one male should be able to dominate the tank, and I won't have to worry about a sub-dominant male carving out territory for himself. Wishful thinking, I know...so we'll see what happens.

What type of anthias were you considering for your tank?

6 lyretails And maybe 4 bartlet one fat head. Had ordered 6 dispair but didn't quite work out.

Yea...a fathead sunburst is still tempting me; I may end up adding one of those instead of a fairy wrasse. I was looking at dispars at first too...but was 2nd guessing that choice and thinking about trying a more hardy sp of anthias since it's my first go at keeping them. Conveniently got a pm saying that some bartletts were available and figured that was a sign from the reef gods, lol.

I do like those but don't like the price. My only fear is not enough hiding spots. I went for minimalist approach however am thinking about adding a couple more rocks in a corner just to be safe.

Khalid, I'd avoid the chalk basselet. I had 3 in a 40 cube and they got pretty big and aggressive. Love the other choices. I think that anthias are a bit hit and miss but do add a lot if color and movement. I want to do something similar to Andrew when I get the new tank going. (Plus another tang, off topic sorry)
